Hi our website sends out emails in text format as well as hmtl format
to our subscribers. I have hidden text for links which can be read by
text readers from the text email but are not viewed by visitors to the
web site who have the prettier link with the title of the story and
the picture to click on.
I just read that having hidden text can make my site seem disreputable
in google's eyes. What to do?

Hi,

Is it possible to have the website content dynamically generated? Some
may update the static text link with "prettier" content when rendered
on a web page. I may need to see an example to get a better idea of
the problem to see if it may actually affect your Google ranking but
if it (Googlebot) determines the use to be more related to keyword or
link spamming or some other category then it can hurt your rankings.
Text is the preferred way to index a site but many will use say
javascript or AJAX to dynamically update the content to a more
visually appealing look. Some dynamic pages (like PHP) may take/use a
parameter to alter the view where one then can use the robots meta tag
(noindex, nofollow) for alt views and styles. Just some thoughts.

Cheers!
