Hello WAFS Subscribers, please see the forwarded message below regarding how Penn State EMS is engaging AAPI month
I
am forwarding along a couple of events that will be hosted by the Asian
Americans and Pacific Islanders in Geosciences (AAPIiG) for AAPI
Heritage month. Their events are
inclusive and people from all backgrounds (cultural and discipline) are
welcome and invited to come! Their aim is to "create a space for grief,
reflection", and discussing a better future for science as a whole.
The
struggles that we have faced, are facing, and will continue to face
until things change are felt broadly throughout our communities. Having
such a big campus can make
it hard to see one another all the time. Also, with the constant waves
of people coming and going, it is sometimes hard to keep tabs on things
for the collective. So, here is the invitation from the group to any one
who receives this message!
AANHPI
Heritage Month Panel: “Navigating the Bamboo Ceiling: How AANHPI
experience the glass ceiling from a social scientist and geoscientist
perspective”
-
Open
-
to all,
-
live captioning will be available
-
Date:
-
May 9th (Tuesday) @ 1:00 - 2:30 PM Pacific
-
Time / 4:00 - 5:30 PM Eastern Time
-
Panelists:
-
Dr. Sharon G.
Goto (Professor of Psychological Science and Asian American Studies,
Pomona College), Dr. Cin-Ty Lee (Harry Carothers Wiess Professor of
Geology, Rice University), Dr. Bach Mai Dolly Nguyen (Assistant
Professor of Education, Oregon State University),
-
and Dr. Helen H. Yu (Associate Professor of Public Administration and Graduate Chair, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa)
-
Highlighting
-
the
underrepresentation of AANHPI in leadership positions, the bamboo
ceiling illustrates how the success of AANHPI in occupational attainment
has not translated to the highest levels of leadership in both industry
and academia. Learn more about what the bamboo
-
ceiling is and
how to navigate it from a panel of experts who have navigated through
different structures and broad disciplines in higher education and
academia!
AANHPI Heritage Month Talk: “Racial Disparities in Science Funding”
-
Open
-
to all,
-
live captioning will be available
-
Date:

May 31st (Wednesday) @ 12:00 - 1:00 PM Pacific

Dr. Christine Yifeng Chen
Racial Disparities in Science Funding: Follow-up Discussion Workshop (BIPOC-only)
-
Open
-
to AAPI
-
individuals as well as all other individuals who identify as
Black,
-
Indigenous and/or People of Color (BIPOC),
-
including mixed and multiracial identities; live captioning will be available.
-
Date:
-
May 31st
(Wednesday) @ 1:00 - 2:00 PM Pacific Time / 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Eastern
Time / (directly after the public talk by Dr. Chen, separate
registration)
-
Discussion
-
will be led by
AAPIiG Steering Committee and co-organizers Akilah Alwan (Graduate
Research Fellow, Auburn University; National Association of Black
Geoscientists) and Dr. Darryl Reano (Assistant Professor, School
of Earth and Space Exploration, Arizona State
-
University; Acoma Pueblo).
-
This
-
is
a closed 1-hour discussion following the public talk by Dr. Christine
Yifeng Chen about systemic funding disparities. This discussion is
intended to make space for participants to
reflect on disconnects between broader scientific culture and their
identities
-
as
members of marginalized groups in the context of persistent funding
disparities. We encourage participants to share their personal
observations and any commentary about the funding
process; however, attendees do not need specific previous experience
with
-
NSF
funding. Through our collective efforts, we hope to reimagine a more
equitable and just future for scientific funding altogether.
-
Registration
-
is required to attend. Please note that
-
this will be an active discussion space (webcams strongly preferred for all participants).
