Yes, save 20K / yr in mundane, everyday traffic fatalities, the kind where our usual response is:
1. what a tragedy!
2. what was the driver/cyclist/pedestrian doing wrong?
3. why wasn't there better enforcement?

Here's a positive, workable approach that has resulted in a traffic fatality rate that's half of ours, called Vision Zero or Sustainable Safety, depending on the country where it's been implemented (with subtle differences).

Warning - it involves lower vehicle speeds - heresy, I know.

Thanks!  Can't wait to read it.  Have been following it in Sweden.  To some extent, it happens here in certain towns.  Part culture, part road design?  Both hard to change, but the longest journey begins with.....

Jerry, I love your analysis of reactions.  Slower speeds have to become socially acceptable for safety's sake.
