At our meeting last week, there was a generous offer from our new member, Richard Holloway, to host us in New Orleans next year.    Of course, having met in Baldwyn/Tupelo, that would break our policy of meeting in Chattanooga every other year.    Going to New Orleans was approved, with the understanding that we would see if our membership as a whole would approve.

Since that time, Larry and I have heard from enough of you to conclude that the preference would be to keep with the policy of staying in Chattanooga (or, as last year, the Chattanooga area).    The ultimate reason for Chattanooga is the more or less central location and concomitant ease of travel.  We will defer the NO decision another year.

Accordingly, the meeting next year will be May 17, in Chattanooga or the vicinity.   We will be back in touch around the first of 2024 for everyone’s planning purposes.

Also, the owner/operator of the Starkville Civil War Arsenal, Duffy Neubauer, offered a proposition for a possible Western Theater book.   I am reproducing his follow up e-mail below.   If you have interest, contact Duffy directly.

Hello Sam,

It was good to see you again last Friday at Brice's Crossroads.  Thank you for all of your help given to me as I try to get this project off the ground.  The hope is that I can find someone who would like to write a unit history of McAllister's Illinois Battery.  I can assist with research material and contact with the McAllister family which still has a huge amount of letters, photos, artifacts and copies of a pamphlet Capt. McAllister wrote after attending the 30 year Shiloh Reunion.

If someone is interested, please have them contact me at 662-617-9962 or 662-323-2606 or email at bjneub...@gmail.com .Thank you again for your support with this project.

Duffy Neubauer

Everyone have a good rest of 2023.

Sam – sorry my wife and I missed the meetings. We were to be in Europe for 5 weeks but our first full day in Amsterdam, Cathy fell and broke her hip. Had surgery there and took 10 days before we were able to fly home. She could not travel last week, so still unable to attend. Now we hope to return to Europe next spring and do what we missed, which was everything, so it seems we will not be back in time for May 17th. New Orleans would be fine for the year after.

Best regards to all

I will go to NOLA if that is the destination, but that said, I think it would be better to postpone that trip a year. On the way home, I thought again that we could do a great trip to Stones River. It is at least "chattanooga-ish."

Since we’re going back to Chattanooga next year, another possibility for a tour in the area might be the buildings or sites associated with the Civil War in Chattanooga. Just a thought…

Looks like y'all had fun out in Mississippi!

Regarding next year's meeting:  I know we have a while to determine it, but in regards to discussion themes, has the group ever looked at the Chattanooga/Eastern TN campaign of 1862?  Admittedly, there's not that much in the way of battles, but the operational/logistical components might be interesting.  Or how Chattanooga fit into the logistics of Sherman's Atlanta Campaign?  Just trying to think of something besides the usual Bragg-Rosecrans-Early Fall-1863 or Bragg-Grant-Late Fall 1863 scenarios; not that these campaigns aren't fascinating, but that doesn't necessarily mean that there's something new to be said about them every other year.

Anyway, I plan to be there next year!  Also looking forward to any excuse to go to NOLA in 2025!

Fellow Western Historians:

Larry Daniel and I hope you've had a blessed holiday season.    We are making tentative plans for our 2024 meeting which will be in Chattanooga.   The topics are still in the development stage, but will have some relationship to the Chattanooga area during the war.  Your suggestions are welcome.

For your planning purposes, the meeting will be on May 17 at a site in or near Chattanooga to be determined.   As per usual practice, the activities will involve:

Get together dinner on Thursday, May 16
Our normal meeting on May 17 with a short business meeting, followed by a morning topic, lunch/group photo, an     afternoon topic, and the state of Western Theater history
A dinner on the evening of May 17
An optional Civil War tour on the morning of Saturday, May 18.

If you could communicate a tentative response in the next couple of weeks, that will help our preliminary planning.   Also, the group preference has always been to stay in downtown Chattanooga because of the walkability of the city.   We assume that is the case, but if you want to stay in the (cheaper) accommodations on the outskirts, please let us know so we can take a head count on that preference.

Best,
Sam Elliott

I plan to attend, possibly with my new bride (married last June), possibly on my own.  If the former, I've got accommodations (her Mom lives in Lafayette, GA); if the latter, I'd be interested in block accommodations for the group (assuming there's enough interest).  Should know fairly soon.

Regarding topics, I'd enjoy discussing Buell's 1862 campaign and the beginnings of Bragg's "change of base" to Chatt and on to KY, and/or the logistics of operations (1862/1863/1864) based out of the city.

Incidentally (because the topic was still referenced in the Subject field), has anyone expressed interest in taking on the projected History of McAllisters Illinois Bty?

Hey John,

I really hoped you would be able to be in Chattanooga, for it would be GREAT to visit with you again. Wish I could get to northern Ohio, but unfortunately, that is a bit far for me to drive.

Dear fellow historians:

A couple of weeks ago, I tried to start lining up hotel rooms in Chattanooga and found that that very weekend there  is an “Iron Man” competition in Chattanooga, having the effect of skyrocketing hotel rates here.    Larry and I explored perhaps going to his home area in Jackson, but the rates there were not very attractive, although not as bad as Chattanooga’s.

Accordingly, we are again going to meet at the Huff House in Dalton, where we met two years ago.    Larry recommends the Fairfield Inn (706) 529-4634.    Because of the potential for overflow from Chattanooga, you should probably book early.  We have not secured a block of rooms, so there is no group price.

I hope that this has not caused anyone any inconvenience.   Dalton and Chattanooga are not that far apart, so coming to one is almost effectively going to the other.

Sam

I have noticed that hotel rates can often be quite high.

Dalton is a good location. Plenty of hotels, the use of a historic location for the meeting, etc.

Seems like this has happened before...or am I getting mixed up?

Perhaps in the future we should consider earlier (or later) weekends in May every other year.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!
