Hi John:

Sorry it has taken me this long to get back to you. The Chattanooga meeting went well--14 present, but several were not serious authors--a growing problem. Next year's meeting is in Murray, KY to study the Ft. Donelson Campaign. It is the last week of May 2020. I hope you and Jan are doing well. Jennifer missed seeing you both.

I recently sent an e-mail to John Marszalek thinking that his address was private. It apparently went out to the group. I'm sorry.

Dear Friends,

Since Larry was kind enough to send me information on the 2020 meeting and Sam and he did such a great job this year, I wanted to write to everyone and say thank you.

Jeanne and I missed being with everyone, and I can well imagine that Mike Ballard would give me "what for" because we missed the meeting.  Jeanne and I  plan to be in Murray, KY next year to get a good look at the Fort Donelson campaign.

On another note, I heard several days ago fron Simon and Schuster that there is a new book coming out on Vicksburg by Donald L. Miller, actually a well-known World War II historian.  He is going to come to the Grant Presidential Library sometime in November of this fall.  I will send along complete information about the event as soon as it is set up.  I hope everyone can come at that time and we can have a good discussion on Vicksburg.

Please do contact me or the Grant Presidential Library if I can ever be of help.

Cordially,

John

This past weekend (a week after our meeting in Chattanooga) I traveled to the Lebanon Valley College'  Annual Political History Conference (Pennsylvania) with four colleagues from Christian Brothers University and The University of Memphis.  I presented a paper on the Memphis City Government During the Secession Crisis.  We were  well received and met some fine scholars (including from the nearby Army War College.  Among them Dr. Heidi Weber, a military historian with a keen insight in Civil War History

Gentlemen,

Eric Wittenberg has expressed an interest in joining the group. While he is mainly an eastern theater guy, he has now written 3 books on the Carolinas Campaign, one on Chickamauga, and is doing another with me on Tullahoma. (we have won him over to the Dark Side.)

What are the details of joining, currently?

Totally agree with Jim. Eric is well known and widely written; a tremendous asset. I assume you have his e-mail, etc. Please pass on the dates, etc. on the Murray meeting.

Western Historian members, and (we hope) interested parties, please consider this e-mail as a “save the date” for our 2020 meeting, which will occur in Murray, Kentucky, Larry Daniel’s old stomping grounds, and conveniently close to Fort Donelson, the campaign for which will be the prime subject matter of our discussions.

The date, as fixed at our 2019 meeting in Chattanooga, is May 28-30, which is the week AFTER Memorial Day.   Our usual schedule is a dinner on Thursday night, discussion sessions on Friday, followed by dinner, and a battlefield tour on Saturday.

Larry will be attending to the details, and we should have a initial itinerary within a month or so.

As always, we encourage historians with an interest in the Civil War Western Theater to join and attend.    Remember that membership is limited to those who have published books or articles on the subject with mainline journals and publishers., although we encourage graduate students with an interest in the subject as well.     Membership is a one time fee of $100, which goes to offset some of the expenses of our meetings.

Best,

Sam Elliott

Friends, to follow up on the e-mail below (with some corrected e-mail addresses), the schedule for the 2020 Western Historians meeting and accommodations information follows:

We have fifteen rooms available for Thursday night May 28 and Friday night May 29 at the Hampton Inn, in Murray, Kentucky.  The cost is $94 per room.  The code is LDCWH.  Reservations for the group price need to be made by May 24.  The motel is offering us their meeting room for no expense.     The reservation link for that property:

https://www.reservationcounter.com/hotels/show/602ecd2/hampton-inn-suites-murray-murray-ky/?cid=sem::TPRC::BA::Reservation%20Counter%20%3E%20US%20%3E%20Northeast%20%3E%20Kentucky::US%20%3E%20Kentucky%20%3E%20Murray%20%3E%20Hampton%20Inn%20%26%20Suites%20Murray%20%3E%20did-602ecd2::hampton%20inn%20murray%20ky::e&creative=79233666924904&device=c&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=hampton%20inn%20murray%20ky&utm_campaign=Reservation%20Counter%20%3E%20US%20%3E%20Northeast%20%3E%20Kentucky&iv_=__iv_m_e_c_79233666924904_k_79233669965778_w_kwd-79233669965778:loc-4125_g_1267737050703591_n_o_e__h_81615_ii_50695_p_2_b_be_d_c_vi__&msclkid=16cb8b0a18b81a349448d54218c39a0e

Sorry I couldn’t make that neater, but my computer skills are uncertain.

Currently, we anticipate the usual schedule format:

Thursday Dinner, May 28, 7:00

Friday, May 29 (All sessions at the Hampton)

      Session 1: Business Meeting 9:00-9:30

Session 2:  9:45-11:30 First Discussion Group

      Lunch: 11:45-1:45 (includes group photo)

Session 3: Second Discussion Group 1:45-3:15

Session 4:  3:30-5:00 Current State of Western Theater Historiography

Friday night Dinner 7:00

Saturday: Participants are free to tour Fort Donelson, 23 miles from Murray.

Either Larry or I will be in touch with some of you relative to moderating our two general discussions, which in keeping with past practice will center in part on the Ft. Henry/Donelson campaign.   Larry will, as he has in the past, moderate the final session.

Please keep us in the loop as you make your plans, so we can know who expects to attend.

Cordially,

Sam Elliott

Friends, Larry Daniel and I have been monitoring the COVID-19 timelines for the resumption of normal life, and have concluded that at this point we just can't be certain that our meeting on May 28/29/30 will be possible.  There is no assurance that the restrictions on meetings and travel and social distancing requirements will be eased by that point.  Even if they are, we all will have a backlog of things to attend to that are currently restricted.   Since we all have schedules to accommodate, we believe that an announcement now will suit the convenience of the group as a whole.   We have reluctantly decided to cancel the meeting for this year, anticipating that we will simply plan on going to Murray, KY and Ft. Donelson in May, 2021.  If you have made reservations in Murray as provided below (or otherwise), let this serve as a reminder to cancel them.

If you have any questions, please advise.    Feel free to use this group e-mail to advise us of significant professional developments, such as publication projects, new postings, etc., and to let us  know about changes in contact information.    Please stay safe, and have a wonderful Easter weekend.

Best,
Sam Elliott

Dear Friends, especially Sam and Larry,

It has certainly been an amazing time.  We at the Grant Association had to cancel our May meeting, and Mississippi State University has been closed for  quite a while too.

Thank you for making the decision about the Western Theater so quickly.  We shall meet again in the future!
