The WSU violin studio now has a blog!

Ok it isn't much yet. But here's the deal: let's all (students and former students) become users on the blog, then start by each posting a bit about ourselves, a pic, and an obfuscated version of our email. To become a user, the easiest way is to also create your own personal blog.

Here's how to do it:

The Short Story

you will now:

• create a username in the CRATEL blog system
• create your personal blog on the CRATEL server
• John will see your blog and associate your username with the WSU violin studio blog
• post your life story to the violin studio blog in the "members" category.

OK then. Let's get started!

Sign up

• Sign up using this page, http://cratel.wichita.edu/blogs/wp-signup.php.

• Choose FirstnameLastname (Follow exactly the caps with no spaces --- called CamelCase) as your account name

• When given the option, create your own blog

• you must use your wichita.edu email address to sign up. If this is not possible, email John at: john.h...@wichita.edu to create your account and blog. (once  you have signed up, you can change your email to whatever you want.)

• Once you have signed up, confirm your account through the wichita.edu email address you provided.

• Your blog homepage will be cratel.wichita.edu/blogs/ "your user name"  (without the quotes)
  

• if you are already a user on the cratel blogs, skip all of this and just email me with the email address you used for your account name.
  

Configure

• To change your password
  • go to your blog homepage and log in
    
  • select "Users" from the menu bar on top.
  • Select "Your Profile" from the sub-menu under "Users"
  • Enter and confirm a new password.
• Turn on the Visual Editor:
  • Select "My Profile" in the upper right hand corner
  • Click the check box under "Personal Options" which says "Use the Visual Editor When Writing"

Post To Personal Blog

• post something--anything on your blog that lets me know that you are or were a violin student
• I will check the new blogs daily and, when I see that you are or were part of the studio, I will add you to the violin studio blog and email you to confirm that this is done.

Create Your Personal Page on Violin studio Blog

• after I have added you as a user to the violin studio blog, visit the WSU violin studio blog, log in, and go to "site admin"

• Write a post that will be your personal page. The post might contain:
  • Your Name as the blog title

  • appropriately-sized picture of yourself. (resize2mail will easily resize your pics online)

  • short description of who you are
  • your email (can be obfuscated i.e. john.harrison AT wichita DOT edu instead of john.h...@wichita.edu)
• post to the "members" category only

• example post

Background (for those that care)

• WordPress, the engine CRATEL uses for blogging, is a multiuser/multiblog system. That means one user can have multiple blogs and one blog can have multiple users.

• For this course, you will have the ability to post on 2 blogs, one blog is your own personal blog and you will be the only user. The other is the violin studio blog and all the members of the class will be users on this blog.

• You don't have to use your personal blog, but you can if you want for anything you want.
• You are the supreme being (administrator) of your personal blog. This means that you can activate blog plugins (for spam prevention or to play audio files, for example), add users, etc.
• John is the supreme being of the violin studio blog. This means that he has to add you as a user before you can post to that blog. I can do this only after you have created a user account on the CRATEL blogs.
• John would love to share "supreme beingness" with somebody, if anybody would like to help maintain the blog.

I created my account etc.  I chose a "look" for my page and now every page is blank.  Pure white...nothing.  Should I start over?

It looks like you chose a theme called revved-up and maybe that theme is broken. I just deleted that theme. Let me know if it works now.

you probably hit "save" instead of "publish." Just log back in and edit your post and see if there is a "publish" button. I'll bet it is only a draft right now...

I just added a category to the studio blog called Goals - Spring 2008. So what you should do:

• go to the violin studio site: http://cratel.wichita.edu/blogs/wsuviolinstudio/
• log in
• write a post for your goals.
• make the title your name
• click on "Goals - Spring 2008" under Categories
• Go to town describing your goals! :-)

I have just added Libby to the studio blog, since she just created her personal blog. This means that Amanda H., Libby, and Chelsea all have created their personal blogs and therefore have access to the studio blog. The rest of you haven't done anything yet. Create your personal blog now:
