Subject: Rally Call - Arts in Education - USD 259
Hello Arts Community,
Over the past few weeks, because of the state budget issues, there have been concerns about the future of Visual Arts Education in the Wichita Public School System.
As you can see from the email below by USD 259 Superintendent John Allison and from the article in the Wichita Eagle today
http://www.kansas.com/2010/02/23/1194372/schools-expect-25-million-budget.html?pageNum=2&mi_pluck_action=page_nav#Comments_Container,
there are going to be some opportunities for community members to value rank programs / services. According to the article in the newspaper, Elementary , Middle School and High School VISUAL ART are on the list of items to be Value Ranked.
I am planning to attend the Monday, March 1st community meeting at Southeast HS – but I am only a single voice…
You are all invited to attend and participate, along with other interested community members.
I have attached some art advocacy articles/flyers that may “help the cause” – You are welcome to share the information as you see fit – (conversations with students, parents, colleagues, community members, business leaders, etc).
Let me know if you have other ideas for increasing the awareness in the community of the importance of visual arts education for the future of Wichita.
Art Education = Visual Literacy, Design, Creativity, Innovation, Our Future.
Maybe I will see some of you at the Monday night meeting...
Respectfully,
Tina Murano

Subject: March 1 Invitation - BOE Night Out On WPS 2010-11 BudgetGreetings district colleagues,
Based on conversations and e-mails that have occurred over the last several weeks, I know many of you share my concern about the impact an anticipated $25 million cut in funding next year will have on the work of our district. As we begin the value-ranking process that is occurring in schools and central offices which will become the foundation of our budget development process, I want to make you aware of an opportunity for staff, parents, students and the community to participate in this value-ranking conversation and share feedback with your Board of Education.
This coming Monday, March 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. the Wichita Board of Education will hold two “BOE Night Out” conversations focused on the Wichita Public Schools’ budget. These conversations will be held in the auditoriums at Southeast High School and West High School. Wichita BOE members will be present at both locations to hear feedback from key district stakeholders.
The conversation will center specifically on one question – “What are the programs and services that stakeholders in our community value most about the Wichita Public Schools?” General information will be shared, then attendees will break out into small groups to address this question. Your feedback will be captured by the small group facilitators, and information will be reported to and discussed at the March 8 Board of Education meeting.
I am attaching a simple flyer that promotes this meeting. You should feel free to e-mail this flyer to those whom you feel would be interested. You should also know that BOE President Barbara Fuller will send a ParentLink invitation to every district family.
Please consider this opportunity to participate in an important community conversation about the development of the Wichita Public Schools’ 2010-11 budget.
Respectfully,
John Allison
Superintendent
