Guys,
I need some help. I'm on the sailing committee at the Cambridge Yacht Club over here on the Eastern Shore. I'm not sure in what capacity, but one of the things I'll be doing is working to get more fleets out to our Admiral Byrd Cup regatta run on July 12 - 13 next year.

The first thing is that I'd like to have my stalwart friends at WRCA show up and dazzle the local sailors with your speed over the smooth waters of the Choptank River. I've heard it said that the group is getting too old or lazy to load their boats on a trailer and drive an hour over the bridge. I refuse to believe those scandalous stories. You are not Devo, you are Men!

Three boats make up a fleet. If you get three different cats, we'll put a handicap fleet of cat sailors together. Hell, I have a Hobie Getaway (Portsmouth rating of 85) with an H16 spin kit on it. It's mild, but interesting downwind. I'll loan it to any two guys that can drive over here; you don't even have to bring a boat. On top of that, I have four beds and two guest bedrooms at my house. I'll put up the first four racers who commit to coming. There's a Denny's a half mile from the house on the way to the club for breakfast. Come over Fri if you want, or early Saturday.

The other help I need is some contact info for the 505s, Flying Scots, and Albacores. These are fleets we'd like to have join the fun.

Entry gets you a ticket for the buffet, a beer, and some oysters on the half shell. CYC is behind this regatta 100% and is committed to giving the sailors a great experience. You could even say you want to do only one day and be scored (no overnight). We accommodated the Comet fleet this year on that schedule, but I know you'll probably want to do both days. You are all cat sailors, a special breed of scallywags.

Thanks for reading through this shameless promotion. I know you'll enjoy the event (nice personalized trophies mailed to you) and I will be fun to see you all again.

Hi David, thanks for the invite and I’d love to come!  My calendar has the 12th and 13th of July 2026 as a Monday and a Tuesday…..are those the correct dates?
I’ll take you up on the lodging - thanks!

Pat. I got you down for a bed. The regatta is July 11 - 12. My bad.

Heidi. Thank you for copying Dave, Bob, and Antonio. I hope they can gather up some interest. And as for the Chesapeake 20s, we'd love to have them and we'll make slips available to them or safe side ties, that's what the Chesapeake log canoes use overnight.

I'd also be inclined to sail/race there the day before rather than trailer.

David - Can you make room for the big boats that would likely be towing them over?  32' Bay Boat and two to four 40+' sailboats. We would all sleep on our boats and might have some extra room for some cat sailors as well.

Sounds like half of the Chesapeake 100. There's a concept. Race over from West River on Friday, buoy racing Saturday, 2nd half of the C100 on Sunday. What a weekend!

David, unfortunately it looks like your event is the same weekend as Sail Newport Regatta.  If so, I will likely be heading north that weekend.

Yes. The club has extra slip spaces and I'll arrange free overnight accommodations. As we get close, give me the details so the dock master can reserve space. Sounds like a great way to go across the bay!

My above email was in answer to Heidi. We can accommodate the bigger tow boats.

David,

Like Bobby, I'll be traveling to the Sail Newport regatta at that time. Well, most years anyway. This year we are likely doing the F18 Europeans which also conflict (July 3-10).

I do like the idea of a distance race one way (or both ways), maybe with some buoy racing thrown in. Could be  revitalization of the JMMR. To make this viable, the race dates would need to move to May, June or September (possibly October). July and August are terrible months to try and sail anywhere in earnest on the Chesapeake.

Thank you for working on this,
Sam

Hi David,
I would like to do this regatta. Please reserve a bed for me in your house, if one is still available. I would like the most comfortable bed.
I am not sure if I will sail over the day before with Paul or trailer the boat over. Do you have a spot to put the trailer?
We will work on the details later. Thanks for making this thing happen.
Are we not men?
