It happened today when Lord Baker called me over to his trailer which he had parked on the club lawn, (a really nice Trailex by the way).

He started lecturing me about what an embarrassment it would be to the club if I showed up at Lake Hopatcong YC for their regatta next weekend with my trailer.  He proposed that I haul my boat up there using HIS trailer.

I tried to reason with him that my trailer (my storage box in particular) would be just fine and would likely garner respect for its vintage craftsmanship not to mention battle scars.

While my back was turned, Mike Brogeley snuck in the club’s back entrance driving his golf cart (it was electric so I didn't hear him pass by), accosted my trailer and single-handedly (and amazingly quickly) crushed my otherwise perfectly serviceable sail box into many quite small pieces.

I pushed Baker aside and ran to the dumpster just as Mike was closing the lid but I was too late.  The deed was done  I reopened it and this is all that was left..

Devastated, is all I can say.  Truly devastated..

Coincidentally, Sam happened to drop a fancy fiberglass box off at my house that he said would fit my trailer.

I’m thinking this is all one big conspiracy.

I’ll try out Sam’s box tomorrow.  But I just know it won’t be the same..

Mike B is a man of many great talents.

Way to go Mike, the club looks better already!

Jahn Tiahnsky has bent the truth quite a bit. I will tell you what actually happened.
But first I will rewind a bit to tell you why we were at the club in the first place.
I don't know how it all started. A while back and buried in one of these emails, Leith said that he might sail on Friday (today). Seeking clarity, I sent him a text a couple days later. I asked him if he planed to sail. He said that Pat might come and they will launch at 2:00. The dismal forecast cast doubt in the back of my mind. I met Leith at the club. The first thing he said to me was not, "Hi" or "Good afternoon" or any of the usual pleasantries. The first thing he said was, "What part of Launch at 2:00 don't you get?" And he was right. I was late. I got to the club around 1:45. I thought about pointing out the "water like glass" conditions. Instead I chose to deescalate the hostile situation. I put the hurry up on. I rigged and launched my boat in 22 minutes. I was in the water at 2:07. I figure if Tihansky can do it, so can I. I figure that I can do anything Tihansky can do. Well, except sail fast, overcome problems, display leadership, earn respect from my peers, speak coherently etc. Anyway, Leith and I sailed in light wind for an hour or so.
We met JT when we got back to the club. It was JT that came up to me and said, "I am afraid that the guys at Lake Hopatcong with think that I live in a trailer park if I show up with this heap." Reading JT's story you might think that I initiated the conversation. Not so. I told him to put some paint on it and it will be fine. We went back and forth for a while and came up with a solution. JT decided to take his trailer home. As he was moving the trailer to his car, the box began to crumble and fall off of the trailer. By the time he got to his car there was nothing left of the box. All that was left was a pile of sawdust running the length of the parking lot. Mike Broglie used a broom and dust pan to put the sawdust in the dumpster.

Since I witnessed yesterday’s events, I’ll add my thoughts. JT’s trailer box was in dismal shape and he explained the trip to Lake Hopatcong. My first thought the box would disintegrate somewhere on Rt95 but keeping quite, I am amazed on JT’s ability to savage the unrecoverable. Mike B’s actions just made the decision final and probably prevented a mishap on the highway.
Regarding John’s tardiness, I was surprised how fast he was in the water launching before me. Overall, it was a nice sailing day and we got a hour of decent wind before the calm which HS teams had to endure. The Happy Hour at S&J is always enjoyable.

Best Regards,
Leith
