Bob, The vinyl's standard width is 5'.  I bought it in 10' lengths. 9' will likely work.   If you don't go real fancy like a carbon fiber pattern it will cost about $125. Some of the top brands are 3m, Avery Dennison and Oracal.  I've done 3 masts with the 3m vinyl. It's real easy to work with.  It will give you 5-7 years of UV protection and if you use a lighter color it will keep the mast a lot cooler for handling. It's easy to repair if you nick it.

I scrubbed the mast with simple green and then wiped it down with alcohol. I wrap the mast in sections. I cut 3 14" wide sections to wrap a mast.  First I lay a small section around the spreader hardware and hounds so that it covers about 3"  above and below. Then I lay a section from the base  to the spreaders, one from the spreaders to the hounds and one from the hounds to the top.

It's easier if you have a second set of hands to lay it down as you squeeze it into place. Small bubbles can be rubbed out with your  fingers.  Hit it with a heat  gun to finish.

Attached a couple of pictures.

Well I think the experts might chime in since they now have our undivided attention…,

Whats the best product to buy?
How do you prep the mast, if at all?
Cost comparison to painting.
How do you apply?

Let’s hear it…

I ordered 3M vinyl to wrap my mast. They sent the wrong color and are now sending me the correct color. They do not want the initial roll back.

You can have this for free if you pay the shipping.

The roll is 5’ wide by 9’ long. Matte gray aluminum is the color. The top of the roll was crushed in shipping, which shouldn’t be a problem since this stuff stretches nicely. See attached picture. The pic is a better image of the color than the listing below.

I’ll hold onto it for a week or so to see if anyone wants it before throwing away.

No rum for me. I'll take ice cream, but I should warn you I am notorious for the amount of ice cream I can consume.

Jeff, Mike and Bobby,

Thank you for all of that. I can see how doing the wrap could really cut down on the overspray falling onto the hallway floors.

I think I’ll definitely give it a whirl….

By the way Bobby I suspect you drink a lot less rum than Mike, so would a pint be sufficient?
