Today was the Annapolis to Galesville race. A strong thunderstorm came through the area last night. The electrical power was out when we got to the club. The mono hull boats were unable to use the cranes to launch their boats. Race Committee postponed the race. The wind was light and forecasted to drop off in the early afternoon. The cat guys decided to launch early when there was some wind. We set our own course and finished just about the same time the mono hull boat were starting and the wind was dying. I think they did the Heritage Race. No one wanted to go to Annapolis today. Not enough wind.
We had ten boats. The course was north start, R4, R2, R4, R2, R4, finish at mooring balls. It was an interesting day. The course turned out to be a little reachy. The wind was light and shifty. Occasionally you would get a gust or find yourself in a hole. Challenging day. Constantly shifting gears and course just to keep the boat moving. I must have raised and lowered the spinnaker ten times.
Bovine ruled the day. She was way out in front most of the time. On the second approach to R2 Bovine was way out in front and found a hole. There was no avoiding it. R2 was right in the middle of the hole. Well the rest of the fleet got a chance to catch up. How many times has this happened to you? You are sailing your best race ever, find a hole and watch your lead disappear.
Bovine was again well ahead on the last rounding of R4 and headed to the finish. I was doing my best to catch up. By the time I rounded R4, Bovine was floundering in a hole about 80 feet from the finish. I don’t know what happened. But when I put the spin up everything hooked up. I was smoking hot, hull flying, moving fast straight towards the finish line. I could imagine Gordon sitting there moving zero miles per hour with his mouth hanging open like a guy from West Virginia. I was coming in like a kamikaze pilot. For me it was 20 seconds of rock star glory. Well, I slammed into the hole. Bovine ghosted to the finish. It took me a while to ghost to the finish.
