Hi Guys,

I need to get some new lines (like Samson Amsteel Blue in 7/64” 2.5mm). Now that APS is gone, what are good sources, West Marine?

Also, the padding material on my cradles has worn out. The original material was from Eurotrax, as product they call “needle felt”. My impression is that it was kind of abrasive and wore out in a few “hot” spots where the hull often rubbed. Does anyone have recommendations on replacement material?

Thanks,
Constantine

Sam sells all sorts of line. Also Bacon in Annapolis. For padding i use Hydroturf that is adhesive backed.

Do check West Marine for Amsteel, I’ve gotten it there at decent prices even when APS was still worthwhile and existing.

Connie,

I had a full reply written but it got erased.

This is what I am using for beach wheel cradles, doesn't collect sand, enough for 2 and likely 4 cradles: https://www.hydroturf.com/product/flat-heavy-brush-sht23f-psa/

   Line:

1) West Marine w/ Port Supply has good pricing on Amsteel. It's good for a loose weave dyneema. Not my choice with maybe the exception of a spinnaker halyard tail. I'm not sure where you would use 2.5mm on a catamaran, other than trapeze lines.

2) I stock most Robline cordage we use on beach cats. Below is a mostly up-to-date stock list with pricing:

Dinghy Control 4mm (most colors), per foot, $0.50
Dyneema Shock Cord, 5mm, per foot, $1.00
Dyneema Shock Cord, 4mm, per foot, $0.80
Dyneema Shock Cord, 3mm, per foot, $0.55
Coppa 5000, 4mm, Blue or Green, per foot $0.70
Coppa 5000, 5.5mm, Red or Black, per foot $1.00
Coppa 5000, 8mm, Lime Green, per foot $1.80
SK78 Dyneema, 2mm, blue, per foot $0.31
SK78 Dyneema, 3mm, grey, per foot $0.46
SK78 Dyneema, 4mm, grey, per foot $0.72
SK78 Dyneema, 2mm, mini spool, 82', $15.00
SK78 Dyneema, 3mm, mini spool, 82', $20.00

Marlow SK78 D12 Max Heat Set Dyneema, 2.5mm, per foot $0.65
Marlow SK99 D12 Max Heat Set Dyneema, 3.0mm, per foot $0.91

Most of this stock is in Florida for the winter, let me know if you need any and I can bring cut lengths back at the end of February.

Cheers,
Sam

Thanks everyone.  I’ll be checking exactly what I need and email Sam.  The hydroturf material looks like it will be perfect.  And, yes, the 2.5mm dyneema is for trap lines.

Not all dyneema is created equally. Robline's Ocean 3000XG in 3mm is in fact thinner than 2.5mm Amsteel, with lower stretch and higher strength to boot. The Marlow D12 Max products are about the same thickness as the Robline products and even lower stretch. Really, the only reason to use Amsteel is its availability locally..

If you are really keen on saving weight and windage, Ocean 3000XG in 2mm is sufficient for trapeze lines. This has been tested at the top of the A-Cat fleet. I would replace them annually, or maybe even twice annually, primarily due to chafe concerns.

I use that 2mm Dyneema and inspect the mast rub areas. I’ve been using mine for two years. They look new
