As a key leader, I invite you to join experts from my staff at a meeting they are holding in Michigan on Wednesday, April 12th to seek input on issues related to local food and urban agriculture in the upcoming rewrite of our nation’s Farm Bill.

The Farm Bill, or Agricultural Act of 2014, has broad implications for agriculture as well as sweeping impacts on energy, conservation, rural development, research, forestry, food and nutrition. As you know, we won important victories in this bill for local food systems and organic agriculture, and laid the foundation for the growth of urban agriculture. Last fall, I introduced the Urban Agriculture Act of 2016 which would create new economic opportunities, giving Michigan families greater access to healthy food and creating a healthier environment in cities and towns across our state.

This meeting will be led by my staff from the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. It will focus on the resources available from the 2014 Farm Bill and the challenges we face in preserving our investments and successes, as well as provide an opportunity for you and other stakeholders to share your thoughts and ideas.

This meeting will be held, Wednesday, April 12 at MSU Pavilion, 4301 Farm Lane, East Lansing, MI 48910. RSVP to RS...@Stabenow.senate.gov or call 517-203-1760 and provide your name, organization, and the number of people attending.

Please feel free to forward this invite to other stakeholders in your organization.

As Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, your input is very important to me. I hope you can join my staff at one of these forums. Thank you for the important work that you do.

Sincerely,

Hi all
At the meeting today, the director for the Detroit office for Sen Stabenow mentioned that there would be some meetings (including the invite below, which is for an event primarily focusing on the ag side of the Farm Bill) for Sen Stabenow's staff to learn more about some of the Farm Bill authorized programs. In early May there will be a field hearing in MI and some groups will be invited to testify. It will be an open hearing so all groups (including the WFPC and your individual organizations) can submit comment letters for the official record. The staffer mentioned we should get started on drafting that so that we can submit it quickly once we receive instructions (likely due by mid-May if not earlier if I had to guess).

I propose the following steps.
1-a) The FAN PAT proposes to the WFPC 2-3 priorities for the Farm Bill
1-b) The FIP PAT proposes to the WFPC  2-3 priorities for the Farm Bill
2) These are shared with the full council for consideration (in advance, perhaps by May 1st?) and approval at the May 8th meeting.

If the current meeting schedule for the PATs doesn't support this, then it can be done via email or by setting up a special meeting.

I'm open to other suggestions about this but will work to make sure that we do at least something related to supporting SNAP. Others will have to do some heavy lifting on the agriculture programs.

Markell

Hi All!

Adding onto Markell’s email from earlier (and my email from last week), I wanted to share that a handful of members from the Farmers & Institutional Purchasing Policy Action Team will be attending this meeting about the next Farm Bill. They have started a document to gather and organize their thoughts for what they want to suggest/question/advocate at the session. Please feel free to add onto this document, which can be found here. As a reminder, the meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 12th in Lansing from 9:30-11:00am. See below for more information about the meeting and how to RSVP.
