The chances for an Intermountain Region heavy snow event appear to be increasing for the 6-10 day period. Most of the numerical models, though not all, close off a deep 500MB low over or near Utah. At the same time, a broad cAk vortex starts to take shape over the Prairie Provinces and Northwest/Yukon Territories. A cold West/Canada vs. milder Central, East alignment seems likely in the last week of this month, though I caution the western U.S. low will at some point eject, and likely with the subtropical jet stream in tow. And while the interior of the West may see very heavy snow, I cannot see parched, fiery California getting any important moisture due to downslope flow off of the local mountain ranges. Understand that I do not see an "end of winter" scenario here, but that may arrive early, say mid-February, which the analogs seem to be hinting at strongly.
