RE: Email received 3/3 (pasted below)
Thanks for the updates! I love the idea of the herb garden!
I am contemplating what to do with my plot this year. I moved and now
have much more sun at home so I was thinking I may focus on just a few
items at the plot, resulting in a nice harvest, and doing smaller
potted items at home. I am planning on squash varieties so far. Maybe
eggplant. Still thinking.... Thought of an herb garden but seems we
will have one at the garden this year, which is awesome.
If anyone is thinking of doing something like this please respond and
perhaps we can coordinate for a swap situation....
I am interested in more involvement as we near warmer weather, I will
give this some thought.
Looking forward to gardening for a full warm season!
Anjela

Upcoming Workshops
"Composting", Community Garden, March 17, 8-10AM, and will demonstrate
various composting methods including vermiculture (composting with
worm bins). It will be run by the dynamic duo of Steve and Greg who
are both Master Composters. (Weather Permitting)
"Tomatoes", Community Garden, April 14, 8-10AM, and will focus on
techniques for growing tomatoes. It will be led by Steve Turlo from
the High Desert Master Gardeners. (Weather permitting)
I owe you all an apology for the workshop scheduling. I sent out a
yearly schedule last Fall with workshop dates for the year 2011-2012.
I have since abandoned that schedule and did not make it clear that it
had changed. The reason I abandoned the schedule is because I have
been having trouble scheduling speakers, both for the dates I planned
and also because of the scarcity of experts who can teach the
workshops and the demands on those experts' time. I'm sorry if I
caused confusion or any other issues for you.
In the future I will send out workshop information only for the month
that the workshop is scheduled, unless I know for sure that a workshop
for another month is definite. I will also add the workshops as they
become finalized to the garden calendar at:
http://www.onetownatatime.org/calendar.html
.
I wish that I could give you more advanced notice, but I think this is
the nature of starting a workshop series, especially in an area where
not a lot of information has been available in the past. I hope that
through the workshop series some of you will decide to become Master
Gardeners yourselves and then the availability of experts on our
region will grow and we can support workshop series like ours more
easily. If any of you know people who have specialized gardening
knowledge that would be willing to lead workshops please let me know.
New School Plots and Individual Plots
Next week we will start building two new school plots!! They will be
for Wrightwood Elementary and Sweet Haven Montessori. They will be
much larger than the individual plots. We hope to have these built by
mid-April. We will also be adding 6 new individual plots. Because the
new school plots will free up individual plots (the old school plots)
this will add 9 plots to the individual plot area. We currently have a
waiting list of 27 people, so I am excited to be able to add these new
plots to ease the waiting list!!
Garden Opening Date
We will officially open the garden on March 30th. This is the date
that we will turn the water at the garden back on and remove the locks
on the gate. But since we will be turning the water on before the last
frost date, it is important that all garden members understand that if
we experience pipe bursting temperatures the water will be turned off
temporarily. However, we will quickly turn the water back on when
temperatures rise above freezing.
I understand that not all of our garden members may want to return to
gardening before the last frost date. Because of this, the rules for
maintaining your garden will not apply until May 15. At that time, you
will need to begin maintaining your garden (if you chose not to start
March 30th). If you know now that you will not be returning to the
garden, that is ok, but please let me know as soon as possible if this
is the case so that I can reassign your plot.
Herb Garden
Laurie Piccolotti, one of our garden members, has taken on the project
of building an herb garden for all to enjoy. One Town will be donating
the building materials and labor and Laurie will be planning the
planting and donating the plants for the garden. The herb garden will
be located directly west of the garden shed. If you have any starter
plants that you would like to contribute to the project please contact
Laurie at:
loll...@verizon.net . Thanks Laurie!!
If anyone would like to increase your involvement with the community
garden and start some projects or volunteer your time for existing
projects let me know!
Thank you and I look forward to the upcoming gardening year!!
