Dear W96 Tenants,

Here at New Kent Aviation, we have decided to begin organizing a series of "Fly-Outs" to nearby interesting airports.  These Fly-Outs will start with a complementary group briefing by a NKA flight instructor at 9AM sharp, then the flight, some time spent at the destination, and finally the return flight home.  You may go on these flights solo (students should speak with their instructors to determine which flights would be suitable for them), with friends or family, or with an instructor.  If you only want to fly one way and split the cost with another pilot, let us know and we will try to match you up with a fellow aviator (no guarantees, of course).  We will also be notifying aircraft owners at W96 and encouraging them to join us in their own planes.  All flight planning and preparation is the responsibility of the participating pilot(s).  New Kent Aviation is only providing the aircraft and a suggested destination.

For our first event, I have decided that First Flight Airport (KFFA) in the Outer Banks would be a great choice.  This flight is roughly 115NM, and the destination is unique as the airport is actually run by the National Park Service.  The Wright Brothers National Memorial is within easy walking distance of the airport, and there are also picnic tables nearby so be sure to pack a lunch.  http://www.airnav.com/airport/KFFA   http://www.nps.gov/wrbr/index.htm

We are also planning a trip to Washington Dulles International Airport (KIAD) to see the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center.  As you may know, Dulles is a major international airport and a hub for United Airlines, the largest airline in the world.  This is a great opportunity to try your hand at flying into a very busy airport.  At roughly 88NM, this flight will take around 1 hour each way.  As you might expect, it is not free to visit KIAD for the day like it is at W96.  There is a landing fee of $12.25, a parking fee of $27.82, and your choice of a $32 handling fee or a purchase of at least 8 gallons of Avgas (at around $8-$9/gallon, but remember we only reimburse at 5% above the price posted at W96).  A benefit of paying these fees is that the FBO offers a complementary shuttle to the museum, bypassing the auto parking fee at the museum.  Although this trip can be flown VFR, I think it would be especially beneficial for an instrument or commercial student building their required cross country hours.  http://www.airnav.com/airport/KIAD   http://airandspace.si.edu/visit/udvar-hazy-center

Next, Luray Caverns Airport (KLUA) is a fun trip, with a landing among the hills in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.  At around 95NM, this trip will take about 1 hour each way, depending on your aircraft choice.  Upon arrival, there is a complimentary shuttle over to the caverns where a tour and lunch are available. http://www.airnav.com/airport/KLUA   http://www.luraycaverns.com

Finally, Tangier Island (KTGI) makes a fun shorter trip of under 1 hour flight time each way.  We will make sure to schedule this trip during the warmer months when there are several restaurants available for lunch within walking distance of the airport.  At 57 miles, this trip still counts towards the cross country time required for many different certificates, but flight times should be well under 1 hour, even in the mighty Cessna 152. http://www.airnav.com/airport/KTGI   http://www.tangierisland-va.com

To kick off our first event, I will reserve all three planes on Saturday, September 14th for the trip to First Flight Airport until Saturday, August 17th.  After August 17th, any unreserved aircraft will go back to our normal scheduling practice.  Additionally, we are offering a $10/hour discount on all aircraft rentals participating in the first Fly-Out.  Please let us know ASAP if you would like to have a plane reserved for this trip.

I am hopeful that many of you will take advantage of these fun trips to build some more flying experience and to take friends or family to see some interesting sights.  I am also requesting that you submit other interesting destinations within a maximum radius of 200NM from W96.  My goal is to conduct one of these fly-outs every other month or so, with a possible break during the winter months.  Your feedback is always welcome and encouraged.

Thanks,
