Greetings,
Here’s another of my loosely constructed hikes to explore Maryland’s Green Ridge State Forest in the vicinity of Paw Paw Tunnel. I can’t guarantee there won’t be a little off trail adventuring, but a lot of the hike will be on forest roads. We will need to
stay together for the first half until we return to the C&O Canal Tow Path. It’s dark in the tunnel, so bring a flashlight.
Paw Paw Tunnel Area - Meet in the parking area at the Paw Paw Tunnel Campground (39.5443,-78.4610) at 9 AM. We will start north on the C&O Canal Tow Path, but instead of going through the tunnel, we will take a trail to the top of the tunnel. We will
then follow Tunnel Hill Road to the east and try to locate the old Hesler Tunnel and views overlooking the Potomac River. Then we will then follow Tunnel Hill Road west and Malcolm and Oldtown Orleans Roads north to Campsite 64. Depending on the time, we
will then use one of several alternates to access the C&O Canal Tow Path returning to the beginning through the Paw Paw Tunnel. A wild guess is 15 miles with 2000’ ascent. See the attached sketch map.
Hikers wishing to carpool should meet no later than 7:00 AM at the Centerville Park and Ride off I66, exit 52, Centerville. Go west on Rt 29 taking the 2nd right into the park and ride, then immediately turn left to the corner
of the lot where our group gathers. (See: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/riders/stone-road )
Please let me know if you plan to meet at Centreville at 7:00 AM or the Paw Paw Tunnel Campground at 9:00 AM.
