Sites and Hikes of Richmond.Time: 8:30 AM
Location: Pump House Parking Lot, Richmond, VA
Hike Distance: Approximately 17 Miles,
Elevation gain/loss: 1,800 feet
- We will start at the Pump House Parking lot.
- Cross the James River on "Nickel Bridge"
- Head Downstream on the Buttermilk trail to Belle Isle
- Make a clockwise loop around Belle Isle to the Belle Isle pedestrian suspension bridge below the Robert E. Lee Memorial Bridge.
- After crossing the bridge head downstream along the walks and park to Brown Island Park.
- From Brown Island Park we will walk across the James on the 1,600 foot "T Pot" bridge to the Manchester Floodwall.
- Then follow the Floodwall and Floodwall trail to the "Mayo Bridge" a.k.a. 14th street Bridge
- Cross the river on the Mayo Bridge
- Once across the river follow the Canal Walk upstream to 10th St. (this is circuitous and not easy to describe)
- Take 10th street uphill to the Capital and circle the capital grounds. There are several very interesting things to see there if you haven't been there before. There are also several restaurants and sandwich shops along the way if we want to buy lunch.
- After leaving the capitol grounds we will work our way to the historic Hollywood Cemetery and make a loop through the cemetery. Two presidents, Jefferson Davis and several famous military and community leaders are buried there.
- After leaving Hollywood Cemetery we will head back down to the James River and hike upstream from the Robert E Lee Memorial Bridge on the North Bank Trail back to the parking lot.
NOTE:
- It is a similar distance from DC to Richmond as from DC to SNP if not closer
- This route is not as simple as it sounds. We need to start together and stick together.
