Maximum number of items in a Vignette project

I have a query about how many items a single Vignette project can hold
without having an adverse affect on the performance on the system
(both front-end and back-end).

The project in question is to host binary files (i.e. word / excel /
pdf files, etc). Potentially we could have a single project with 6000
binary files within it.

Does anyone know if there are recommended limits to the number of
items?

If this may cause performance problems, should this purely be at the
back-end (i.e. in VCM) or could this effect the live site also.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sam,

The recommended number of content and static files associations per project or channel is 500 - 1000. If you have more than that, you may want to consider moving the same into sub channels and/or sub projects.

The problem we have is that splitting these into seperate projects
means that they are harder to locate.

Our breadcrumb is generated by the channels, so splitting the channels
could be confusing for the end user.

Is there any way we could house these files outside the CMS and simply
reference them?
