I have a phone running Android 12 and was having issues sending APRS location packets.  I’m not sure if this occurs with previous android operating systems.

The issue:  When using APRS, the HT app sends out the correct positions while the phone is in use (not in sleep mode).  However, when the phone goes into sleep mode and the screen turns off, the HT app continues to send out position packets, but the android phone does not update the phones location.  Therefore, I was sending the same packet location repeatedly when the phone was in sleep mode even though I was driving around.  This issue is not due to the HT app, rather it’s due to the battery saving “feature” of android OS 12 phones which, by default, does not update the phones’ location when in sleep mode.  And if the phones’ location is not updated then the HT app just continues to send out the last available location that was updated by the phone.

The fix:  You can allow apps to access the phones’ location all the time, even when the phone is in sleep mode.  This will keep the location updating.  Go to your Location settings.  Click on the HT app.  Change the setting to “Allow all the time”.  Now, as long as the HT app is open, the phones location will continue to update.  So, even when the phone goes to sleep, the phone will continue to update its location allowing the HT app to send out accurate location positions.

This has been my experience with my new phone.  Perhaps it's only a android OS 12 issue or perhaps it is due to my specific phone.  Anyways, if you are experiencing the same issue try this fix.

This is a documented know fact that the app takes it position from the phone gps.

If the phone goes to sleep or another app causes it to go to sleep or the battery fails the radio will use the stored position and keep beaconing.

Thanks for the tip on keeping the app alive..

This happens on both types of app.

Keep using APRS ;>)
