I recently got my technicians license and started looking for a mobile dual band radio.  After watching hours of videos and reading countless reviews, I decided I wanted the VR-N7500.

Key Reasons:
  • High Power Dual Band
  • Easy to "hide" in trunk when used mobile
  • Tablet control when using as a base station
  • Ability to use anywhere in my house utilizing wifi and a networked repeater
  • Integrated APRS (very interested but no experience yet...)
Just as I'm getting ready to pull the trigger, I'm having second thoughts.
  • Will the 7500 continue to be supported after the N7600 launches?
  • Would I be better off to trade the 50w power of the N7500 for the mobility of the N76?
The new features of the N7600 are nice but I don't see them as required for me.  I plan to put the unit in the trunk and connect via Bluetooth, so the upgraded handset with screen wouldn't be an advantage when mobile.  When using as a base, I'd probably want the larger screen of a tablet anyway.

I'm wanting to get more active, so the N76 could be a nice incentive to get out more.  But is that enough to warrant a less "slick" install when mobile and giving up the power when using as a base?

I'd really be interested in your thoughts.  I'm leaning pretty heavily towards the N7500 but a bit concerned that it may be orphaned once the N7600 goes live.

Thanks for the resources this group provides!

Hi Mark

Welcome to Vero and their radios. We are all waiting for the new mobile to be released and I think final testing and sanctions make delays!!!!
If your mobile look at the N7500 or wait till the N7600 is released..
The N7500 had a small production run of units where the 2 m TX chip became unsoldered as it gets hot at full power...
I have several and they have been bumped about in the top box of motorcycles for over 3 years...and been good.
Vero have come out with improved features over the 4 years of the N7500 and hand helps are good quality.
So for mobile use you want power, walking use a handheld like the N76 as it's tough and waterproof but 5-7 watts... More standalone features but things have changed in 4 years since the release of the app.
At the moment there is no date or price for the N7600 so I think it's a matter of wait and see..
Hope this has given you some thoughts to play with and it depends on prices you are prepared to pay ..

I have the7500 built as a versatile go-box and home transmitter. But if you can wait, the N7600 as the ability to be used without a phone.. So it worth waiting.

No. You want both (i purchased both) 😊
My first handlet were an ice m ICW21... Around 500$..broke 2 time (keyboard), cost me 200$ on each repair. 3rd repaired, i try it and broke the flex.... I got kids, stop doing radio... And now restart... OMG... They are so inexpensive now! I got 2 quansheng, one tidH8, and the N76 is my prefer one!

Bluetooth range is not that great. I modified mine to have an external bluetooth antenna. Find how-to here👍☺️

Thanks for the reply Erik.  As you said, I probably will want both the HT and the mobile unit.  I'm now thinking about buying the N76 first and then making a decision on the mobile unit after the N7600 drops.

Regarding BT on the N7500...how bad is it stock?  My main use case will be putting the main unit in the trunk of my car, then using BT to control the unit and voice functions using my phone/tablet.  Would I have difficult with the BT range in that scenario?

Thanks again for your help!

Thank you Marnoch.  I'm still on the fence between purchasing the N7500 or N7600.  I'm leaning towards purchasing the N76 now and my mobile station after the N7600 drops and gets some reviews.

Hi Mark

The BT range is 25-30 ft. In open air when I tested it in the top box on the motorbike... Walls and metal will cut down the signal so don't put it in an rf screened case.
Some have extended the BT antenna as it's mounted on the front as part of the PCB.
There are reports on how to do it and what has been done. But you have to remember the phone can only do a certain distance...
I don't think you will have an issue in a mobile.
But make sure it has plenty of ventilation as they can get hot on high power...

Thanks Wayne.  I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on a UV-Pro (I like the NOAA capabilities).  I still want the higher power mobile unit but I'll wait to see pricing and reviews on the V7600 when it drops.
