Hi all,

Maker Faire Vancouver 2013 has been tentatively scheduled for the first weekend in June.  That's LESS THAN 6 MONTHS AWAY!!!  Whoa.  How did that happen?

For those who are new to VHS, Maker Faire Vancouver was started by VHS members and tends to be kind of a big deal around here. VHS members can participate individually, and/or bond together into a concentrated mass of awesome.  I've stepped back into the maker coordinatrix role this year, so feel free to contact me with any questions/concerns about showing off your project(s) at maker faire.  Caveat: most things are still up in the air right now, so I probably won't have many solid answers until January-ish.

Also, I'm keen on having a darkroom this time around, so if anyone has any strategies for making a darkroom within the PNE exhibition hall (read: giant empty box with very high ceilings), please let me know.

The countdown begins!

-Jenny

So much for being an innocent bystander ;)

You can often rent pipe+drape for pretty cheap and check around with the sci-fi cons to see if they have their own stuff in storage. That stuff plus some extra pipes can hack together a quick and giant tent like area given enough of the stuff. I know that Seattle area cons have a bunch, I'll poke around the people I know and see if there's the same up here.

To me, a `darkroom`is to develop films and print photos.  In this case, what are we talking about?

I think there should be a home brew (as in beer) stand/stall/area. Both for home brewing but also to show off some of the amazing DIY brewing systems that are out there :)

Would that be appropriate?

Re: Darkroom
Good point.  I guess it's more of a dimroom.  We're going for dark enough that you can see the art/science, but bright enough that people aren't tripping over art/each other.  So far I've been leaning towards a couple of big carport-like structures covered in dark material, but a) that much dark material could get expensive and b) It might not give us enough ceiling height.  Thanks for the sourcing tips, Loial!

Re: home brewing
I'm definitely in favour of homebrew at maker faire.  We couldn't give away or sell alcohol on site, but equipment and tutorials shouldn't be a problem.  You could probably even do the first phase of a brew during the event.

FYI: Maker Faire is pretty do-ocratic, so if Stefan (or anyone) wanted to collect a bunch of home brewers and their DIY brewing equipment and have a mass brew-booth at maker faire, that would be a Good Thing.
Also, a homebrew extravaganza could make a kickass party, just sayin'.

Off the top of my head, the major constraints of maker faire exhibits are:
1) it has to be safe and secure enough to withstand an onslaught of kids + enthusiastic and possibly clueless adults
2) It can't suck up all the power
3) It can't be blatantly illegal or dangerous.  Controversial is fine, but no DIY meth labs or bomb-making tutorials.

Apart from that, if you made it, and you can talk about it passionately for hours on end, it's probably welcome at Maker Faire.

Cool. Sounds amazing :)

I'll send something around to the homebrewers sometime in the new year to test for interest

Jenny,

How high a ceiling are we talking?  Do you have estimated dimensions?

Would Black Paper work just as well? Like a roll of tar paper?

I'm sure if nothing else can be found there are rental places that have large tents but I believer most are white.

This is the PNE forum. Ceiling heights are over 30 feet and it'd be best to avoid union time for costs.

Rephrase: How high do WE need the box to be?  10tf? 20?  Is someone going to buy out the rest of my EL wire and make a chandelier?

Possibly easiest and cheapest would be to get a carport/tent with a
regular white cover, and then add an extra layer of dark fabric or
paper on the inside. That would be simple enough that we could set it
up ourselves, and probably sturdier than a single layer of dark cloth
or paper.

Also, IIRC, you need special permits to build a structure >15' or so
high. But we can chat with the PNE folks about that - they should
know.

Dan: There's no particular goal for ceiling height, just that the
ceiling height will ultimately limit the possibilities. If no one
applies to bring a super-tall art installation, then 10' ceilings are
no problem. But I would be sad if we had to reject a giant el wire
chandelier due to space constraints.

Stefan: ++on homebrewers

It's good to be back! I have to admit last year's maker faire still
managed to kick ass without me, though.

Note that it would be awesome to have projectors mounted at a level higher than our patrons. If we could mount them at 10' on the ceilng, then it would be awesome, just a thought.
