ENVY Decommissioning Bill - H589

Change in Date
Tuesday, April 13
9:00 - 1:30 pm
Vermont Statehouse, Montpelier, VT

Meet in the small lobby area just before the cafeteria entrance

9 am: Sign in; get pertinent information and directions
9:30 - 1:30 am: Head to the house galley to follow the proceedings of the day
Legislative LUNCH break:  Find our representatives for face-to-face discussion.

It is always important that legislators see those of us who care that VY's shut
down is paid for by the corporation that made the mess (not VT taxpayers) and
that VY is shut down as safely and cleanly as possible. The more of us, the
better.

It is important to pass this year's Decommissioning Bill by a large margin as
the language is quite strong.  It "requires that each nuclear energy generation
plant in the state institute two trusts, one with sufficient funds to support
return of the site to a "greenfield" condition and the other with sufficient
funds to support long-term spent fuel management".   As well, this vote will be
the House's voice in Vermont's desire to close VY and replace it with
sustainable, renewable energy.

If you can't make it to the statehouse on Tuesday, please do contact your
legislator by phone and leave a message asking them to vote YES on H 589, the
VY Decommissioning Bill. It is great to see the pages bringing pink slips to
representatives on the floor during debates and voting.

CALL the Sergeant at Arms to leave a message for your rep. (802) 828-2228

Thank you for all the work you do!

P.S.: If you can't make it, consider keeping your calendar open for when the
Senate votes on the Decommissioning Bill in the next few weeks.

Entergy schedules public meeting on tritium

April 12
4 to 7:30 p.m.
Ramada Inn, Putney Road, Brattleboro, VT

Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee engineers, who conducted the recent
investigation into a leak of tritiated water at the plant, will be available on
a one-on-one basis to discuss all aspects of how the tritium leak at the plant
site occurred as well as how it was identified and stopped.

Other technical experts will be available to answer questions including
hydrologists who studied the flow of groundwater and directed the drilling of
monitoring wells to aid in the investigation.

Chemists that were involved in the investigation will be available to describe
the process of the tritium sampling and how it contributed to the
identification of the leak and how sampling is being used to support
groundwater and soil remediation.

The engineers will also present various charts and maps that were used over the
course of the investigation including groundwater monitoring locations and
three-dimensional views of the underground structures where the leak occurred.

State and federal agencies that oversaw the tritium investigation have been
invited to participate.

Refreshments and handouts will be available

Searsburg Wind Facility Tours

Tuesday, June 1 - Education Day!
Also: July 20, August 17, Sept. 21 and October 12
Tours are scheduled for late morning and early afternoon.
Searsburg, Vermont

The Searsburg wind power facility is comprised of eleven 550-kilowatt wind
turbines that make up the 6-megawatt power plant providing enough emission-free
electricity to supply 1,600 average Vermont households. It is owned by Green
Mountain Power and went online in July, 1997.

Searsburg also serves as an educational resource and research tool for
investigating wind generation in cold climates. As a result, Searsburg has
established the standard for wind energy generation in the Northeast's harsh
climate - exemplified by the facility's 90%+ availability over its 10 years of
operation.

Periodic tours of the Searsburg Wind Facility are available in order to give
the public an opportunity to get a closer look and feel of an operating wind
power site.

It is important to maintain a balance between the requests of tour groups and
wildlife habitat preservation efforts, so tour dates and size of groups are
limited. Registration is required. If you would like to experience an
operational wind power facility up close, contact Cynthia Grippaldi.
