The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold an open house and public meeting on Monday, April 19 in Brattleboro, Vt., regarding groundwater contamination issues at the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. The plant is located in Vernon, Vt., and operated by Entergy Nuclear.

The open house will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 5 to 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at Brattleboro Union High School, 131 Fairground Rd., in Brattleboro. During the open house, NRC staff will meet informally with federal, state and local officials and the public concerning groundwater contamination at Vermont Yankee and provide the NRC’s perspective on the potential public health and safety impacts. The staff also will address regulatory requirements related to tritium and how the NRC fulfills its safety mission. A number of information stations will be available to address a broad range of topics associated with Vermont Yankee.

Then, from 6 to 9 p.m., the NRC will hold a public meeting in the auditorium at the high school. Following a brief opening statement to provide the status of NRC inspection into the groundwater contamination issue, NRC staff will respond to questions from the public and elected/appointed officials in a more formal format.

NRC Region I Administrator Samuel J. Collins said, “We understand that members of the public are concerned about the tritium issue at Vermont Yankee. These two forums give the public the opportunity to have their questions addressed by NRC staff.”
