Meredith,

Ok, here's the deal.  We have asked you to do a lot related to Vermont Yankee this year and you have come through.  Our State Senate voted to retire the old reactor in March of 2012, and that is huge.  However, VY retiring on schedule is not the end of the story.  The reactor site will still be a radioactive waste dump that will cost upwards of $1 billion dollars to clean up.

Entergy, the reactor's out of state corporate owners, must be responsible for every penny of a timely, safe, and thorough clean-up.  Right now they want to walk away from their responsibility, leave the reactor for 60 years, and pass the clean up on to our grandkids' generation.

You and I cannot let that happen. The House of Representatives will vote Tuesday, and the Senate shortly after on a bill to hold Entergy responsible.

Unfortunately, the House clean-up bill only gets us half way and we have hard work ahead of us in the Senate to make the bill stronger.  We'll keep you posted as things progress and as always let us know if you want more information.

Thanks for everything you do.

With exam season looming, this documentary and discussion may be off the table for VLS. Maybe someone is interested in following up to see if it could be shown here this summer or next fall? Maybe Chad could help: Chad Simmons, Safe & Green Campaign

Climate of Hope Discussion Thursday, May 6th at 7pm at the Marlboro Tech Center- Room 2 East, 28 Vernon St, Brattleboro

Climate of Hope was created to demystify climate change and nuclear energy. The effort to address climate change ushers in the potential for a number of nuclear power stations throughout the world.  This powerful documentary and presenters take the audience on a tour through the science of climate change, the nuclear fuel chain, and the remarkable energy revolution that is now happening

"Marcus and Kerrie Ann, both from Australia, are International Event Coordinators with Ohio-based group Footprints for Peace.  Coming from Australia, they focus on the nuclear issues of Australia like uranium mining and nuclear waste dumps that are destroying sacred land and Aboriginal communities.  Both Marcus and Kerrie-Ann have given many talks around the world drawing large numbers of people from diverse backgrounds who leave with a greater understanding about the nuclear industry."

I think this is a great idea. I will email Chad. Any suggestions if we should do it in the fall or summer. Maybe we can show it while Peter Bradford is on campus during term 2...
