*ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Blind Cricket Council (PBCC) on Monday said the final
and some matches of the fifth edition of the Blind Cricket World Cup 2018
would be played in Pakistan.*

Talking to APP, PBCC chairman Syed Sultan Shah said Pakistan would be
hosting the 2018 World Cup matches in Pakistan and Dubai.

"Besides Pakistan, seven other teams would be participating in the World
Cup including India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Australia, South Africa
and West Indies," he said.

According to Shah Asian teams India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal have
confirmed playing matches in Pakistan while matches with other countries
including Australia, South Africa and West Indies would be played in
Dubai,", adding the final would also be played in Pakistan.

He said World Cup matches to be played in Pakistan would portray and
promote the soft image of the country. "This would help pave way for the
restoration of international sports in the country."

"We are proud to host the World Cup and hopefully it would boost the effort
for the return of international cricket to the region," he added.

The PBCC chairman further said we had requested the Prime Minister of
Pakistan for financial assistance for the successful holding of the World
Cup. "We had written a letter to the Prime Minister in which we have

2. Visually impaired show the way to sighted car drivers.

A car rally is usually related to speed and driving skills but as 52 cars
rolled out on the streets of the city today with unique teams of sighted
drivers and visually impaired navigators embarking upon a 40-km journey, it
was a rare sight for the onlookers.

Organised by the Society for Welfare of the Handicapped as part of its
golden jubilee celebrations, Patiala today witnessed its first blind car
rally in which the blind acted as navigators for drivers behind the wheels
with the help of Braille maps while criss-crossing throughout the city
landmarks.

The rally was a unique example of coordination between a sighted driver and
a visually impaired navigator held with an aim to bypass misconceptions
about people with disabilities and provide them with a platform where they
could display their skills. It was approved by the Federation of the Motor
Sports Club of India and each participant was insured for Rs 5 lakh by the
federation.

“It was the best day of my life. Travelling doesn’t excite me a bit since I
cannot see and all I used to do while travelling is sleep. But today, I
actually experienced how one feels while driving. I can’t wait to attend
more such events,” said visibly excited Harman (15).

For 28-year-old visually impaired Shiv Kumar Sharma, who works with the
Legal Services Department in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh,
this was once-in-a-lifetime experience when he led a driver to his
destination after covering 40 km. He said it had made him confident that he
can achieve anything in life.

Meanwhile, one of the female drivers Chetna, who took part in the rally,
along with her six-year-old daughter Anahad, said: “I wanted my daughter to
see how these children fight against all odds to excel in life, whereas
people like us keep complaining about small little things in life”.

Prachi Sukhwani, with 80% vision loss, makes it to IIM-AEven her 80% vision
loss could not refrain her from achieving dreams as her rock solid
willpower and determination stood far above her partial
disability. 21-year-old Prachi Sukhwani, who lost 80 per cent of her vision
in class III, has cracked the Common Admission Test (CAT) in 2016 that too
with whopping 98.55 percentile - a test, considered one of the toughest for
pursuing MBA. As reported by the Times of India, Prachi is a Bachelor of
Business Administration (BBA) student at Maharaja Sayajirao University's
Faculty of Commerce. She is suffering from macular dystrophy, a form of
rare and genetic eye disorder that gradually causes loss of vision
affecting the retina. "My short term goal is to join a company, preferably
a multinational one. Once I get some experience, I will have my own
start-up. But my long term goal is to open an NGO for the blind," TOI
quoted Prachi as saying. Coming from a simple middle class family, Prachi's
father Suresh Sukhwani owns a garment business while her mother Kanchan is
a home maker. Prachi has got calls from the top three IIMs, Ahmedabad,
Bangalore and Kolkata."I have been associated with the BBA programme since
its inception in 1993. But this is one of the proudest moments. Prachi
deserves special applause for her success despite all odds. Her success is
an inspiration for everybody," TOI quoted professor Sharad Bansal, dean of
Faculty of Commerce, as saying. Source:

1. BHIM remains inaccesible to 150M visually-impaired.

HYDERABAD: The Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) app, the bedrock of the
central governments push for a digital India remains inaccessible to the
150 million visually impaired Indian citizens, a study has found.
The case study on the BHIM app by the Centre for Internet Security found
several accessibility issues with both Google’s android and Apple’s iOS
versions of the BHIM app. BHIM was launched on December 30, 2016, nearly
two months after demonetisation. The application is a government-owned
payment gateway aimed to facilitate fast, secure, reliable cashless
payments through mobile phones. The User Interface (UI) of the application
is pretty much straight forward but fails to take into consideration the
needs of the visually challenged. Source:

BENGALURU: Bengalurean Sagar Baheti, had a point to prove. By becoming the

Boston Marathon on Sunday, he has sent out a clear message. The 31-year-old
finished 18th in his category in this tough marathon that saw about 34,000

paper. Paul explains, “These dots change as the text is being read. The
result is a device that could be likened to an e-reader (like the Amazon
Kindle) for the blind. Books in text format can be stored on the device or
loaded using USB pen drives. The device has WiFi, ethernet and HDMI ports
as well. These would be useful for transferring data or software to the
machine.” Source:

High achievers who lost eyesight but not vision, honoured. 15 visually
impaired people, including IAS officers, professors, athletes, and
musicians get recognition at IHRO event for their incredible resolve and
subsequent success.

Dr Garimella Subramaniam, more popular as Gary Subramaniam, was born in
Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. He completed his early education in Madras.
After his schooling, he not only went on to do his post-graduation in
Politics from the reputed Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), but also
earned a doctorate in Political Science from the prestigious London School
of Economics (LSE). The 56-year-old scholar now works as the Deputy Editor
of an English national daily. While it all seems like a tremendous
achievement, what is even more awe-inspiring is the fact that Subramaniam
was born visually impaired. "After my schooling, my father asked me to
return to Vishakhapatnam to join a 'special' college there. I told him that
I will not go backwards in life," Gary says. "If you are a disabled person,
JNU is a great place to study. People are very supportive and the intent is
always positive," he adds. Now, while others may find it unusual that a
visually impaired person holds the important post of a Deputy Editor,
Subramaniam says that, in fact, he did not face any difficulty landing the
job. In 1995, his employers imported a special software device from England
for him, which converts text to speech. Currently, he has no problem in
keeping himself abreast with news, editing copies, and writing articles.
The software, Job Access with Speech (JAWS), helps him do his job without
any hassle. "I see that progress is happening at a faster rate. Earlier,
people were prejudiced because there was ignorance and lack of social
awareness. But times are changing," says the happily married man. Source:

*Blind Football Academy soon in Kochi. *The city is likely to get a Blind
Football Academy (BFA), the first ever exclusive academy for
differently-abled talents in the country soon. The Society for
Rehabilitation of Visually Challenged (SRVC) and the Indian Blind
Federation (IBFF) are making an effort to establish the same. According to
Times of India news report, The orientation camp scheduled prior to the
second edition of the All India Invitational Blind Football Tournament,
which is scheduled to be held by April-end under the aegis of SRVC and IBFF
at Aluva Blind School Grounds, will set the tone for identifying the best
talents from across the country. “Our aim is to start the academy to train
and develop the best players to create a national team of world class
standard. The players will be given vocational skill training in computers
and foot reflexology to ensure a parallel source of income when they are
not engaged in matches, especially for those who do not end up successfully
in pursuing football as a profession,” said Sunil J Mathew, sporting
director at IBFF who is spearheading the blind football project. Source:

Sightless but full of vision.

*Paris, April 30:* A blind Indian girl from Chennai in her twenties is
opening the eyes of the French.

Beno Zephine, the only blind person ever to be recruited to the Indian
Foreign Service (IFS), is taking the well-ordered, impeccable foreign
policy environment in the French capital, where diplomacy was born, by
storm.

Zephine, who joined the IFS in 2014 against the advice of those who
interviewed her for the civil services examinations, has been posted at the
Indian embassy in Paris - her first overseas posting - for seven months
now.

Mohan Kumar, India's ambassador to France and a native Tamil speaker like
Zephine, has found a blind teacher to instruct Zephine in the French
language.

Myrem Dogan, the blind teacher who can write French in Braille, and her
blind student have spent every morning, five days a week, in the last six
months imparting and receiving one-on-one French lessons.

New recruits to the IFS - "language trainees" or LT for short -
compulsorily spend their first posting learning a foreign language. The
French language has been an obsession with Zephine as long as she can
remember.

In a spirited, hour-long conversation at the Indian embassy here, Zephine
told *The Telegraph* how she had gone to Alliance Francaise in Chennai when
she was in lower kindergarten asking to be taught French.

Amused teachers at Alliance Francaise had sent her away, telling Zephine
she was too young to be taught French in a formal set-up structured for
adults.

When she joined the IFS, Zephine saw a second chance to fulfil her
childhood dream of learning French. She cited that language as her first
preference to the ministry of external affairs as a probationer. That
helped earn her the opportunity to be posted to Paris as a language
trainee. Source:

NITI Aayog document inaccessible to blind. Activists term situation
‘unfortunate’

The three-year action agenda document recently released by NITI Aayog is
inaccessible to the visually impaired and those who use assistive
technology for reading, say activists.

The plan proposes several policy changes for short-term implementation in
India, and covers sectors such as agriculture, industry and manufacturing.

*Beyond reach*

The document available on the organisation’s website, however, is
inaccessible to many.

“The document is inaccessible to the visually impaired and those who use
assistive technology for reading,” said Ankit Rajiv Jindal, co-founder and
director of Diversity and Equal Opportunity Center, a social enterprise
working in the field of disability.

He said that although the text appeared to be in English for a sighted
reader, it was not recognisable when read using assistive technology.

Around Nandi Hills in 17 hours.

BENGALURU: Among the 932 partcipants at Bengaluru 2017 Walk, an annual
walkathon held in January, was Sowmya K Bhaskar, a human resource manager
from Bengaluru who recently moved to Hyderabad. Being 90 per cent blind,
Sowmya has crossed out walkathon from her bucket list as she completed a 50
km trail from Nandi Hills in 17 hours along with three of her colleagues.

At the age of 10, Sowmya was diagnosed with Muscular Degeneration, a
condition that gradually leads to vision loss. At that time, she only had
three things on her bucket list – to become a doctor, earn her own living
and pay taxes. The time was hard for her and Sowmya was in complete denial
of her condition. Her family had settled in Belur town in Hassan district
and were not sure on how to get Sowmya treated.

Sowmya had no option but to revise her bucket list. She decided to get a
double major degree instead. Today at the age of 35, she holds two degrees
– MBA and HR and Marketing. Walkathon was not really on her bucket list but
now that she has successfully completed one, a second walkathon is
definitely on her list.

“People mistake disability for complete dependency. I had to prove that
wrong. I am blind, so what? I can still do what others do. The walk was my
stand for equality and inclusivity,” says Sowmya. Source:
