This Diwali, too, they will give light to others.

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 9

This Diwali again, Institute for the Blind, Sector 26, is ready with its
brand of candles and lamps, assembled by blind students.

For the last 20 years, the institute has been selling them. “We do not put
any stall. But every year, customers have been coming to the school. The
scale has risen in the last few years,” said secretary BD Sharma. He said,
“The school is able to make a sale of Rs 2.5 lakh on Diwali.”

“The rate is much cheaper as compared to the market. Our wax is of higher
quality and finishing is good,” said Joint Secretary Prem Girdhar. The
school with the help of its Class IV employees makes candles and blind
students help in packing them. In earthen lamps, students help in inserting
wick.

Different shapes of candles are available, including those which can float
on water and are in shape of animals. Wax balls are sold which can be fixed
on gates. The school purchases wax from the Sangrur’s oil depot. Source:

Project Vision’s `Walk For The Blind, Shillong On Oct 12.
SHILLONG: On account of World Sight Day, 2017, the Project
Vision, North East will organize “Walk for the Blind, Shillong” on October
12 with the primary objective to raise awareness on eye donation. “Over 500
people are expected to attend the walk and 50 blind people will also
participate”, Bhanwar Nain Singh Didan, President Blind Walk Shillong 2017
told reporters on Monday during a press meet. The rally will be flagged
off from Shillong Club and the route will be from the venue to Police
Bazaar and back. The rally will seek to allay the myths related to eye
donation. Didian added that every community-Christian community, Rotary
Club, Lions Club, Ramakrishna Mission etc., are extending their support to
the campaign. Project Vision, an organisation that works for the blind,
highlighted that the World Health Organization (WHO) report in 2010
indicated that India is home to the largest number of blind people which
accounts to 15 million persons. The organisation raised the agenda of eye
donation so that three million blind people could get the gift of sight
through corneal transplant, which can be accomplished only through eye
donation. Project Vision is a ‘global movement’ to eliminate corneal
blindness from the world in 10 years with its goal to make eye donation a
globally accepted norm and practice, to provide affordable eye care
facilities for the rural population. Deepa L Khonglah, Faculty
of Bansara Institute of Ophthalmic Sciences (BIOS) informed that corneal
blindness is the third leading kind of blindness in the world. Source:

Everyone has a flavor for thrill and adventure but having a disability
makes it look impossible to pursue one. There are many who think on the
same lines but there are also some who are willing to break the barriers to
living their lives to the fullest and came together to join us for the
first edition of 'RevvUp - Inclusive Trip to Adventure Island',
India’s Only All-Inclusive Trip to Amusement and Water Park,
specially planned and organized for persons with special needs on the
1st of October. The trip saw a participation of 30 plus people, including
both with and without disabilities. The guests enjoyed like children, on
rides such as side winder and flip out, escaping the heat of the sun under
the rain dance ‘Shalala’ along with various sparkling dance and magic
shows. Receiving such positive reviews from our guests and the huge success
of the first edition encouraged and motivated us to organise more such
trips in the future.
Therefore, we have decided to treat people with another dose of India’s
most audacious and thrilling escapade to an inclusive water amusement park
and we are back with the second edition of 'RevvUp – Inclusive Trip to
adventure Island’ on 29th October 2017 at Rohini, Delhi. For any assistance

Dressing up for Ivanka: 'Tactile' pavements for visually impaired.

HYDERABAD: Less than three weeks before the Global Entrepreneurship Summit
2017 (GES) kicks off in the city , the civic authorities are busy dressing
up the city in every possible way for the foreign dignitaries that are
slated to troop into the city by the end of the month.
One such spruce-up exercise has the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation
(GHMC) laying `tactile' pavements along some roads to make them friendly
for the visually impaired. These 'tactile' pavements have block tiles and
bars in the middle and on the sides to serve as indicators to make it easy
for the visually impaired to detect them with the help of a walking stick
or their feet. Source:

I am blind so is love, get over it": Nidhi Goyal, India’s first disabled
woman comedian.

Nidhi Goyal is a visually impaired stand-up comedian, making her mark in an
industry dominated by men.

Nidhi wasn’t born blind.

At the age of 14, she was diagnosed with an incurable, irreversible eye
disorder (retinitis pigmentosa) that eventually robbed her of her sight.

She learned that many people have various preconceived notions about
disabled persons.

In cases like these, Nidhi would either call the person out or make a joke.
It was on such an occasion that her friend and stand-up comedian Pramada
Menon, asked Nidhi, “Why don’t you do comedy?”

Nidhi agreed but when at the time of her first show she was at backstage,
and she cursed herself for not having thought the decision through.

I kept telling myself, who asked you to get into comedy? You crack a few
jokes, and think you are a comedian!” Nidhi recalls.

But she could not go back on her word; she had to step up and perform a
set. And Thank god for that.

This set the ball rolling for her journey as a comedian. Source:

‘Include lessons on rights of disabled’. CHENNAI: The HC has suggested to
the government to include lessons on ‘disabilities’ and rights of the
disabled, as also the value of tolerance, empathy and respect for them in
the school curriculum from the next academic year. The first bench of Chief
Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar gave the suggestion when a PIL
petition from L Muruganandam of Tirupur district came up for hearing. The
government shall ensure that the differently-abled have equal access to
education. Admission in an educational institution shall be ensured in
respect of the differently-abled, not only in special educational
institutions, but also in general schools so that differently-abled kids
can mingle with and be brought up along with the normal students”, the
bench said. The government shall immediately, in consultation with the
Chief Commissioner or the State Commissioner and in collaboration with the
TN State Legal Services Authority and District Legal Services Authority
there under, conduct awareness campaigns and sensitisation programmes for
protection of the rights of persons with disabilities. Programmes and

merits and abilities of persons with disabilities and of their
contributions in all fields including the professional field, and foster
respect for the decisions made by persons with disabilities on all matters
relating to family, life, relationship, bearing and raising children, the

To see without your eyes
*A painting workshop connects the hearts and souls of visually disabled and
sighted students. *
Pablo Ramirez Arnol doesn’t do much to establish his presence. The stocky
Argentinian painter, dressed comfortably for a humid Mumbai afternoon in a
T-shirt, jeans, a wooden hairpin holding his locks in place, enters a room
full of youngsters at St. Xavier’s College almost unnoticed. The room has a
mix of visually disabled
<http://www.thehindu.com/tag/1524-1510/disabled/?utm=bodytag>and sighted
students, around 20 people. He goes around the room, saying hello: for
those who can see him, it is a firm handshake and an exchange of names; for
those who can’t, his hands turn gentle, touching their cheeks, their ears,
pausing there for a moment, and the words go beyond names, to a joke, a
comment of some kind. “When I touch you like this,” he tells them, “I’m
writing to your soul.” Source:

How dare you waste taxpayers’ money?’ Obstructions due to
potholes, poles and kiosks on pavements, especially for the
differently-abled, in Delhi University’s North Campus on Tuesday led the
Delhi High Court to take civic body officials to task for “criminal
negligence”. ‘Extremely distressing’ A Bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita
Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar termed the situation as “extremely
distressing” since tactile markings on pavements were “replete with
obstructions”, including pillars, hoardings and signboards. The court said,

How one woman chose to be the eyes of visually impaired children.

*Vanessa Bahati*’s last born son was born with visual impairment. After
visiting several hospitals in Europe and locally, the results were
negative. The reality that her son would never be able to see propelled her
to begin her charity organisation ‘*Jordan Foundation*’ which was named
after her son.
The foundation is now home to other visually impaired children. The mother
of four had a chat with Women Today’s *Sharon Kantengwa* on how the
organisation has changed the lives of visually impaired children.
*Tell us about Jordan Foundation*
Jordan Foundation is a local NGO that was founded in 2015 after my last
born Jordan was born blind. With time, I realised the problems that
children in Jordan’s situation go through and I was propelled to help other
visually impaired children from poor families. We currently have 21
children between two and eight years of age with visual impairments that we
take care of from different parts of the country. They have caretakers and
a teacher who gives them basic education. Source:
