Hi to all,

This is what i think how the things went at SOSS-08.

"SOSS-08" - a workshop held at Computer Center, MSU Baroda in
association with our own VGLUG on Open Source Technology and
Softwares.

First of all i would like to mention that it was a wonderful thought
to have such a thing like SOSS-08, as Open source and We as a users
both need this kind of events, events that will promote Open Source to
the people who know it and also who don't know ! I am related with
this Open Source and stuff for the last year and so and though also i
found SOSS-08 very useful to improve and share my knowledge. It also
proved useful to know many people out there in world.

Now i would like to tell something abt content , content was selected
after considering all people out there , there are some easy or say
known to many of us topics like MySql and Squid proxy and up to some
extent Oracle also and there are topics like Clustering and Thin
Client Computing that according to me somewhat new for almost all
people. Virtualization was quite good as it is the technology in
demand !

MySQL db administration with phpMyAdmin and mysql-admin tools.
By Mr Devendra Jadav and Mr Vinay Pandya

This was the first topic and the it was conducted thoroughly and we
get to know many and many things that we can do with MySQL. They take
a lot time to ensure that we get more and more of that , and according
to me they really got success in that. Now we can play with that and
explore more abt that.

Mail Server with anti-virus and anti-spam protection.
By Mr Nilesh Vaghela

This was the second one, and it was conducted by non other than our
own Nilesh Sir, and this was the third time i was attaining his
lecture, and i really enjoyed it as i do every time and this comment
is not here as i do my project under him but i m sure that not a
single person can dis-agree with me. As usual he is very energetic
during the whole lecture and we got to know the basics behind "e-Mail"
technology that i dont know before. The participants are able to
configure the mail server successfully and they also enjoyed the
mailing service developed by them only ! And it would be very good if
we can experiment with some anti virus also at the time but its ok. We
can experiment it by our own and if any problems occur then VGLUG is
always there with us!

Clustering - High Availability and High Performance clustering.
By Mr Nilesh Vaghela

This was our own topic ! As we are doing project on it. And we have
successfully configured HA and somewhat HPC also. So what else i
should say abt this. Sir told us to handle the practical of clustering
at that time and it was nice experience for we guys to stand in front
of you people and deliver what we know to you.

Thin Client Computing And Virtualization technology.
By Mr Jigish Gohil.

Now on second day Jigish Gohil Sir started the lectures. I have only
heard about him before, but today i was attaining his lectures and
really it was very nice experience. We got our own virtual machines
running on our pc's and really it was gud feeling to successfully
complete our practical session! And the Thin Client Computing lecture
was very well taken, and we got everything there and again in
practical session of it , we have done that successfully. So that was
nice. Though sir don't able to saw us switching of one virtual OS from
one machine to other but nevertheless he told us that at any time we
can reach to him , so its good.

Implementation of Oracle on Linux and Squid Proxy server
By Mr Ashish Bhawalkar

This was the last topics and to be true , i wanted to have more on
Oracle instead of Squid, as many of us know it. But what we found is
Squid took all from Oracle and Sequence of lectures are changed and
oracle comes last when there is not enough time. In the Squid also
again due to some problems we cant able to have successful practical
session. But as we know we can play with Squid as its comparatively
less complex then Oracle and what i want was more of Oracle.

So its all abt content and the lectures.

So now would like to say something abt management of this whole
event. It was very good. From the very first time when i had mail Mr
Vinay Pandya one of the symposium co-coordinators about how to get the
registration form as i cant find it on MSU site , i got his replay
very soon about the formalities and with the Brochure of SOSS08. So
this shows that they are really working hard behind this event. The
lab is also very good as all pc are with pre-installed RHEL and SUSE ,
so the support team of computer center have done a fantastic job
there.

The food and tea and snack facility was excellent and does anyone
there who dis-agree with me ! I know the answer ! No one can yaar.

As i also said at the closing time that i am from Baroda only but
this is for the first time i am seeing this kind of event there in
MSU , may be its possible that they are there but i dont know abt
them , but this time i have to appreciate the hosts for organizing
such an well managed event.

Now i also want to mention something about participants also. Its
good to have all types of persons there ( students, teachers, IT
experts, industry persons). But what i feel is that there should be
more students then this yaar ! After all we should be students in
right manner. I was volunteer in this kind of event once when there
was one week training program on OSS ( open source software)for
lecturers of Gujarat's engineering and MCA colleges at our college
VGEC , the participants there are not very committed to learn as the
participants are here in the case of SOSS-08.

And as we all understand that technical problems occur at this kind
of events but i hope some improvements in terms of time for whole
event and the same of particular subject. So that we can have more of
the whole subject, i do believe that we should not hope for everything
in this kind of event , we have to have explore the subject by our own
and we should use this kind of event as a gentle lift ( push )so that
we can do more by our own. And this event achieve this goal very well.

So over all its very very good event and i am looking forward to
attain more of it. So organizers we are ready to have more of Open
Source yaaar !

Hi to all Open Source lovers & admirers!

This was indeed a unique and very useful event on the OSS for the
first time in Baroda. I also appreciate the hard work and good support
of SOSS 08 management. Not to forget the Computer Center of The MSU
which served as good basic platform for SOSS-08 in terms of space,
Pc's (of course with pre-installed softwares) and arrangement of food
and snacks.

The main thing I would like to share is about the quiz thing we had on
the first day before lunch. We should have such things in more
quantity to share knowledge & at the same time have fun!

The lectures delivered by various session leaders were extremely good
in quality of knowledge and the delivery of the speech was also good
with some fun in between to make the environment lighter. All the
participants were extremely co-operative & were also having good
knowledge on their own subjects, which helped other participants a
lot.

Overall a good event & more of this should happen on any scale; large
or small, with or without snacks or lunch; but knowledge should be
shared and we should be able to help each other.

The other aspects I would like to focus are

We should have lectures & practicals at different times saving time &
resources.

If we want to cover more topics then the no. of days for such event
should be increased according to topics and particula topics(of course
interlinked topics) should be covered on a day. Time factor should be
considered for everybody.

These are only my views and not enforcement. But I think many of them
will agree on it.

Vote of Thanks to all of those involved directly or indirectly with this event.

Thank You very much !

Wish you all great success !

Hi All,

It's indeed great to see a community shaping up and taking the much needed initiative. Thanks to all for making event a success. We need more such events, more such hands-on, more participants, more speakers and as Jigishbhai would have told it more developers !

I loved the food. It was simply great. I think only post-lunch-session-speakers were complaining. :)

And, yup those 25 GB are waiting for vglug.org to go live. Nileshbhai waiting for MX record(s).

Thanks again to each and everybody who contributed and helped in one or other way to make this event a success.

Cheers,

Samyak

Dear All,

I was wondering if someone can put the videos or presentation on the seminar so those of us we could not make it can have some glimps for the event. Also if there might be a webcast or recoreded video session for future events so people we live far away can take the advantage for the same. Hope its not too much to ask...? :-)

Hi,

It was really good to see people gathering under one roof from different work background. It was another wonderfull & successfull seminar at Computer Center, MSU, Vadodara. Last year we had one small seminar and that was also success as we had to limit the number of participants.

It was good to see Jigish Bhai's efforts for Novell's Kit!! I hope next time around Red Hat too provide something like this for such an event. I can try for Red Hat's Kit next time! ;) :)

I would like to put on suggestion nex time around please provide participants the documentation of Topics covered in Seminar, so that they can utilize the knowledge gathered from such events.

Thanks Jigish Bhai, Nilesh Bhai, Ashish Bhawalkar, Kishor Bhai, Dr. Dhanesh Patel (Director of Computer Center), Vinay Bhai & Jadav Bhai and my wonderful Computer Center collegues Dhaval Pancholi, Ambrish & Brijesh!!

Great work done!!

Regards,

Hello to every (open) one,

It is my pleasure that I got opportunity to attend this big symposium
-- SOSS-08, MS University. As I have seen so many seminars, workshops
and other events but this was very fantastic. Each and every topic
covered with its theoretical and practical parts very carefully in
the short time.

It was great that the big gurus of Open Source Technology based on
Gujarat, sharing their (open) knowledge in this two day symposium.
The topics like MySQL, SQUID Proxy, Clustering (Its also my own team
project), Virtualization and others of Oracle and Thin Client
Computing are new and emerging technology of today's world, which is
covered in this two day symposium.

In addition to good knowledge materials we got, the management, lab
and also meals was very very good, which I can't forget to mention it.

Students like me and other open source savvy peoples are very keenly
interested in this kind of future events.
