I'm very interested in using VGL with my 9th and 10th grade Biology students, but only have access to Chromebooks. Is there another version of VGL that can run on Chromebooks?
Thank you,
Jennifer

Delighted to hear from you. There are VGL versions written for Mac and PC platforms. You might write to ad...@uwo.ca for further information.

Thanks for your interest in VGLII.
Harry - thanks for the referral.
Here’s the scoop: the VGLII application requires Java and Java will not run on Chromebooks.
However, there is a version of VGL with a subset of VGL’s features that will run in any web browser and does not require Java.
It is called jsVGL. As it exists now:
  • you need a separate web page for each problem type (one example is here http://intro.bio.umb.edu/MOOC/jsVGL/JsVGL_SexLink.html) so you can’t select problem files like you did with VGLII; you’d have to set up a bunch of web pages. I have some problems set up on my server and could set up more if you need them.
  • it cannot save students' work to disk either as a .wrk file or as a .gr2 file for grading.
  • it does not have chi-squared tests
  • if enough people are interested, it might be possible for me to integrate jsVGL into an LMS like Blackboard so that students could work problems which could be automatically graded and the results sent to Blackboard.
Let me know if you need more information or have questions or suggestions.
