How do you "select" a cage for a summary chart?

Hi all,

I see it's been a few years since there's been any activity on this group. I'm still using VGL for my upper-division genetics course, and each year students complain that they can't "select" a cage to create a summary table -- clicking on the window does nothing. Each year, I have to remember that we work around it by using the Super Cross to create a new cage and a summary chart.

I'm not sure if it's a platform-specific bug. I'm testing on Linux right now and the bug is present -- I'll follow up with a test on Windows. I'm pretty sure it's a problem on Mac but I don't have one to test right now.

Is this a bug for anyone else? Is there, say, a keyboard shortcut to select a cage that I don't know about? (Is anyone still here?)

Thanks!
Brian

Brian et al

You click anywhere inside the cage that isn’t an organism and then it gets highlighted like this

(see the red border)

this is on mac

I don’t have a way to test on linux; sorry

Huh. I can't get the cage to highlight in Windows either, no matter where I click. I'll ask the Mac people in class today and see if they're having trouble.

Thanks for your response (:

Hello all,

I just tested this on Windows 11 using VGL 3.3.2 and I can say that it works.

Make sure you double-click it, and not on an individual. Try double-clicking on one of the trait boxes (e.g. the word purple or red or gray) next to the individuals. That works for me.

Hi y'all,

The plot thickens! In my classroom we usually just work on the "practice" problem and that's all I had tried. Turns out, double-click to select a cage works just fine for on Windows and Linux when I'm using a "real" problem but NOT when I use a practice problem!

Again, I think the super-cross workaround will be fine. Just an oddity I thought I'd document. Thanks for everyone's help.
