Dear Friends,
We watched with great sadness the heartbreaking images of the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban on Sunday. For so many of our active military and veterans, especially those who deployed to Afghanistan and lost fellow warriors there, and for the gold star families, this opens the raw wounds of the loss of their loved ones. For Vietnam Veterans and those of us from that era, the scenes of people flooding the airport in Kabul for evacuation brought back memories of what happened during the fall of Saigon in 1975.
While many veterans who served in Afghanistan see what happened as inevitable, it is, nevertheless, deeply troubling and hurtful. Please know that while some of you might question what your sacrifice was for - we do not. The country was kept safe from any foreign terrorist attack for 20 years, and the mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks was brought to justice. You served admirably and with honor. Remember that, as we do.
Our fervent hope is that the promises of protection made to our Afghan interpreters and allies and their families be fulfilled - they need to be evacuated immediately.
With warm regards,
Eva Usadi
