The Department of Informatics at the University of Oslo looks for 2-3 PhD candidates to the Global Infrastructures research group for a period of 4 years.

The Global Infrastructure group pursues mutually reinforcing agendas of contributing academically towards theory development in parallel with empirical studies and interventions. The groups’ members conduct empirical studies both within the Norwegian healthcare sector (See for example http://www.mn.uio.no/ifi/english/research/projects/kint/index.html and http://www.mn.uio.no/ifi/english/research/projects/reach/index.html) as well as in developing countries through the HISP project and the DHIS 2 software (see http://www.mn.uio.no/ifi/english/research/networks/hisp/ and http://www.dhis2.org/).

The ideal candidate for these positions holds a Master’s degree or equivalent in Information Systems and should have excellent academic qualifications as well as good communication and collaboration skills. The candidate preferably has experience in doing empirical fieldwork and using qualitative methods. Candidates with other relevant backgrounds will be considered, and must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in another relevant field, such as computer science, social science or public health. Candidates without a Master’s degree have until June 30th 2014 to complete the final exam. Candidates are expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials and must show interest in an academic career, including both research and teaching/supervision activities. The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. An application for admission to a PhD programme must normally be submitted within three months after the start of the research project that is intended to lead to the PhD degree (detailed regulations: http://www.mn.uio.no/english/research/doctoral-degree-and-career/regulations/).

None-Norwegians who are not native speakers of English must document their proficiency in English (detailed regulations: http://www.mn.uio.no/english/research/doctoral-degree-and-career/regulations/proficiency-requirements.html).

The salary for the 4-year PhD fellowships is currently NOK 416 600 – 468 400 per year, depending on qualifications. The fellowships involve 25 % teaching and/or research assistance per year. The positions are located at the University of Oslo, Norway.

- Your motivation for pursuing a PhD degree
- What makes you suitable as a research fellow
- Why you want to participate in this research initiative
- Your knowledge of and experience with qualitative research methods
- Your knowledge of the information systems research field
- Your knowledge of ICT in the healthcare sector or/and developing countries

The project description must fit the Design Methods for Complex Architectures project and in particular its theme of architectures (see https://www.mn.uio.no/ifi/english/research/groups/gi/demca.pdf). It is expected to include research topic, method and plan (3-5 pages).

Shortlisted candidates may be invited to present, discuss and revise their project description as well as selected publications (such as their master thesis) as part of the assessment procedure.
