to University of Reddit - DJ 101 Beat Matching & Transition
Overview:
Hello fellow Reddit DJ’s. In this class I will be hosting you will
learn how to beat match by video, you will learn how to transition
from one track to another. And most of all you will have fun and be
proud of your work regardless of how bad it may sound. Discouragement
is the number source of giving up. No one is the best when they first
start. Some learn faster than others, some already know the basic gist
and want to get back into it. Don’t be disappointed if you can’t do it
after 1 hour. This requires a lot of practice.

Materials Required:
Speakers,
Option 1: Two Vinyl Turntables, a Mixer, and 2 vinyl tracks. (Optional
& better = Serato + computer)
Option 2: Two CDJ’s, a Mixer, burned discs you have in MP3 or WAV
format. (Optional = Serato+ computer)
Option 3: All in one Midi controller + computer

Things we will cover:
Some of the things I’m going to cover is the basis of beat matching. I
like to beat match by ear because sometimes vision or auto beat
matching just does not cut it especially if you want to do live shows.
Transitions…. Now this is going to be a bitch to teach. This is more
of trial and error. Where a DJ’s style really comes out, you want to
transition to the next track as if the song never ended. This is the
main goal that we strive for as DJ’s. To keep the party up to keep the
music playing and adding some flavor to make the crowed roar.

Course Length:
I honestly don’t think this course will last more than 2 weeks. What I
will do is make a google group. Post up my text based teaching with
links to videos. Soon afterwards I will go ahead and keep up with the
group for more questions. I would like to find a Co-Admin to help me
out with the Google group a DJ or music produce preferred Skill level
is irrelevant as long as you know the general way of doing your thing.

Homework:
Yes there is going to be homework. I want recorded samples of your
beat matched tracks. I want everyone to participate and give their
opinions on everyone’s beat matched tracks. Please have positive
criticism. I don’t feel like booting people out of a group over
trolling.
2 assignments 1 will be a track where you were able to beat match
slide the fader left and right to show that you have the beats
aligned.
The other assignment will be about transitioning from one song to
another while making it sound smooth.
