Good morning, families of Unity Junior High!

It feels good to be back into the swing of things as we fully embrace the New Year!  For the week of January 21st, I bring to you 6 important announcements plus a sneak-peek bonus regarding an exciting initiative at Unity High.

This Week's Top 6:

1. Students are Conferencing with their Advisors Today! - Note that all of our students are conferencing with their advisors today to discuss their academic progress over the current trimester.  During conferences, students and advisors celebrate recent accomplishments and progress, identify opportunities for improvement, set short-term goals, and devise clear action steps that lead to students achieving their goals.  We encourage you to ask your child about her/his experience in conferences today and the goals and actions she/he has set with the support of advisors.  Please also feel free to reach out to either of your child's co-advisors with questions.

2. Support Your Child at Home in Preparing for Upcoming Interim Assessments - We will be administering assessments over the coming two weeks in history, science, and mathematics (see the exact dates below).  It is never too late to help your child in developing her/his study skills!  Here is a helpful article that details how you can support your child in studying at home so that she/he is performing at her/his very best on her/his final exams.  Simply browse over the article and take part in those recommendations that you feel are most important to you and your child. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s co-advisors and/or teachers directly for course-specific study tips.
  • History: 1/28 - 1/30
  • Science: 1/31
  • Mathematics: 2/5 - 2/6
3. Field Trips this Friday, January 25th! - Students will be engaging in field trips this coming Friday.  Of note, our 8th grade students are going to the Holocaust Museum in Battery Park to take part in a guided tour and speak to/hear from a Holocaust survivor.  They will also watch a film on the Holocaust entitled, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" and do some pre-work in the morning at school before departing on the trip. The trip is connected to what 8th graders are now studying in history class.  Contact Ms. Hefney if you are interested in chaperoning at fhe...@unityprep.org or (347) 460-7173.

4. Help with Recruiting and Welcoming in New Students and Families - Meeting on Thursday, January 24th at 6pm! - With the 2019-20 school year lottery fast approaching this spring, we are seeking family members who can help us in recruiting and welcoming Unity’s next cohort of rising sixth grade students. Ms. Hefney is holding a meeting for parents and caregivers who are interested in helping us connect with prospective sixth grader families for the 2019-20 school year on Thursday, January 24th at 6:00pm at 432 Monroe Street. Light refreshments will be served. If you are interested in participating, please RSVP by contacting Ms. Hefney at fhe...@unityprep.org or (347) 460-7173.

5. A Shout-out to Families who Attended Last Week's Coffee with our Co-Principals - Mr. Burns and Ms. Roy Gaines thank all families who participated in last week's coffee talk.  We look forward to continuing in our good work during next month's coffee talk.  For those who have yet to attend a session, we encourage your participation and engagement!

6. Upcoming Open Houses for Prospective New Students - We are holding open houses for prospective new families on the morning of February 5th and evening of March 20th (see exact times below).  We encourage our current families to invite other families whose child is entering middle school next year.  Contact Ms. Hefney with questions at fhe...@unityprep.org or (347) 460-7173.
  • Tuesday, February 5th at 10:00am
  • Wednesday, March 20th at 6:00pm
Bonus: A Sneak Peek at Unity High - February College Tours! - Unity High students will visit 12 colleges in February as a part of our College and Career Readiness program!  During the visits, students will have an opportunity to experience a bit of the college life, meet college students and professors, learn about specific college programs and courses of study, and evaluate whether the colleges offer a promising fit.  Students will visit the following colleges and universities: Villanova University, St. Thomas Aquinas College, Manhattanville College, Trinity College, Lincoln University, Barnard College, Columbia University, Quinnipiac University, Kingsborough College, Lehman College, Brooklyn College, and St. Francis College.

On a similar note, Unity High's National Honor Society is currently raising funds for additional college tours this coming spring and summer.  Visit their Gofundme page here
