Subject: The Unity Scoop at 584! Week of December 10th
To: Josh Beauregard <JBeau...@unityprep.org>

Good morning families of Unity High,

We are very excited to host you next week during conferences.  With your children being ever closer to graduating from high school, it is immensely important that we - you and Unity's staff and faculty -  act as one in supporting your children so that they are especially well positioned for success in their college and career endeavors.  Conferences are a key driver in accomplishing this, which is why we are devoting a school day to meet with family members and students to reflect on the school year thus far and plan forward accordingly. We look forward to hosting 100% of our families next week!

In this week's edition of the Scoop, I bring to your attention 7 important announcements plus a bonus.

This Week's Top 7:

1. Family Conferences Next Week - December 19th and 20th! - We expect 100% of our families to attend to review their child's academic progress by meeting with  advisors, teachers, and/or administration.  Families should sign up for a one hour time slot with advisors by Friday, 12/14.  Please reach out to one of the child's co-advisors if you have not yet confirmed a scheduled conference time.  Note that students will not have classes on Thursday, 12/20, due to conferences - students should only report to school on Thursday when accompanying their family member during a scheduled conference.  We do strongly encourage students to attend conferences with their families!  The available times are:

  • Wednesday, 12/19: 3:00-6:00pm
  • Thursday, 12/20 11:00am-7:00pm
2. Free Study Sessions for AP Students through AP for All - Families of students enrolled in AP courses, please see this list of available study sessions that your student may attend through our partnership with AP for All. Students have the opportunity to work with skilled AP teachers and college professors and to meet other AP students from throughout the city.  These workshops are a great way to give your scholar a leg up on AP exams.  Unity students who attended a recent study session for AP Environmental Science had a blast.  Please encourage your child to sign up, and reach out to Ms. Duphiney (mdup...@unityprep.org) if you have any further questions!

3. Monthly Gathering with Our Co-Principals - Tuesday, December 11th (TODAY!) at 6pm - Co-principals, Ms. Fuller and Ms. Yun are excited to meet with families next week!  Note that we have changed the gathering time so that more family members can make it.  Save the date and RSVP with Ms. Rivera at cri...@unityprep.org.

4. Calling all 9th Grade Family Members! - On Friday, December 21st, Unity High’s 9th graders will participate in service field trips to to kick off the holiday break. Students will visit multiple locations, like Repair the World, where students will learn how to canvas and spread awareness on important issues impacting communities. To make these trips possible, we need four parent/guardian volunteers to chaperone. The trips will take place between 9-2pm. Contact Ms. Olivier, 9th Grade Team Co-Leader, at aoli...@unityprep.org with questions and/or your interest in chaperoning. Thanks in advance!

5. Two Upcoming Community Service Opportunities! - We have two opportunities for students and families to spread the holiday cheer through two community service opportunities:
  1. On Thursday, December 13th, students and families are invited to join Brooklyn Community Services at 285 Schermerhorn Street in Downtown Brooklyn from 4-6pm to assist in wrapping holiday presents for their clients. This opportunity has space for 10 volunteers.
  2. On Friday, December 21st, all 9th grade students and their advisors will be serving the community with organizations across Brooklyn (see #4 above for details).
On a related front, thank you to everyone who took part in this past weekend's community service.  We had over 40 Unity community members take part (see the pics below)!  A special shout-out to Ms. Alteon, Ms. Olivier, and Ms. Tucker for their facilitation and leadership.  I've said it before and I'll say it again - Be proud, Unity!

6. NOTE: Friday, December 21st is a mandatory day of school! - Our students will extend their education beyond the walls of our high school on Friday by experiencing a flurry of field trips all over NYC.  Trips vary by grade level and attendance is absolutely mandatory for all students.  Absences on 12/21 will be unexcused unless a doctor's note is submitted.

7. Reminder! Refer a Student to Unity and Collect your Google Laptop! - We have a few seats available in grades 6, 7, 8, and 9. Simply refer a student who then enrolls in our school and be eligible for a Google laptop, which will certainly be valuable to your child’s educational pursuits both in school and out of school.  Applicants can apply online at unityprep.schoolmint.net.  Contact Mr. Doscher, Unity’s Director of Operations, with questions at cdos...@unityprep.org or (347) 746-1575.

Bonus: Members of Unity's Athletics Department and JV Boys' Basketball team recently experienced a healthy dose of college life by attending college basketball games at the Barclay's Center as a part of to the NIT Season Tip-Off.  Check out the photo below!
