China, like India, has a cultural affinity for gold.  Any attempt at monetizing the metal in future has to reckon with how to coerce their people into giving it up (depositing it).  The british and dutch developed a cultural disgust with golden ornamentation especially in churches - this allowed the nation's gold bullion to be efficiently used as high powered money and thus lower the cost of capital.
