You may remember when the modern library released the list of their
top 100 english language novels of the 20th century in 1998. In this
interview: http://www.kcrw.com/etc/programs/pc/pc980804top_100_novels
,
one of the members of the panel who created the list admitted that
most panel members had not read all of Ulysses. KCRW's host of
Bookworm fumed and said they should be ashamed to be literary folk and
to not have finished it. Weren't they curious?
Anyhow, this is further kudos to Paigerella, to all listeners and
readers of Joyce.

Anyone who has read Ulysses knows why it's on top of the list. I'm
reading it for the second time - and it's much better than when I read
it 5 years ago.
I've been trying to maintain a reading and discussion group to enhance
our understanding and enjoyment of the tome, but I've run into a
severe lack of interest here in San Luis Obispo County, CA. Anyone
interested in "real time" Joyce dicsussion? I'm up for FW as well as
Ulysses.
Cheers

Oh, I would love that. Too bad you're not in SF! Have you tried putting up fliers in local book stores?

Or... putting a notice up on Craig's List? :)

Hey thanks...
Yes, the listing's been on Craiglist since November!
I've gotten about 8-10 responses. Most - or at least half - never show
up, the rest eventually drop out because they don't have time for the
reading, and the other two troopers, well, they're finally moving back
to cities where there actually is a spark of intellect. (Maine and New
Orleans)
Book store postings are a good idea, but at this point, I'm feeling
pretty discouraged, like locking myself in my room with a bottle of
Jameson and finishing the book by myself. That's how I read it the
first time, but the bottlew was Bourdeaux and "my room" was the Cantal
dept. of France!

Are you in SF? Interested in on-line discussions of Ulysses or FW?
Real life meeting are more fun and effective, but we do what we can.
Eventually I'll get out of this place and move to a city or town with
a soul and a drop of consciousness.

I have an exam in June (June 12 - pray for me), work is driving me
crazy. So Ulysses is on the back burning for a bit. Up to the chapter
Oxen of the Sun, nearly finished that. I think. Oh well, roll on
summer! Going to Joyce myself out!

Hey Sugar,
Thanks for the feedback.
Good luck on your exams! I'm sure that if you were able to get through
the Oxen of the Sun, you will ace any test.
I'm reading it for the second time, and the discussion group I put
together is now disintegrating. I was mostly just lost the first time,
but this reading has been far more rewarding. The group helped a lot.
We, or at least I, made it through the Cyclops episode so far.
So what's your novel all about?
