Being on a strict budget, how do I feed a family of 6 (including 4
teens), without going broke? Many times fresh foods, and items in the
health isle are beyond our budget. So would totally love suggestions on
how to shop! :)

Thanks!

4 teens - omigod! I can't really help, cuz I'm a single. But I think
serving-for-serving, kasha (buckwheat groats) is less expensive than
cold boxed cereals. Maybe you can get them to eat cut-up carrots and
apples after school instead of boxed snacks. Can you get them to be
popcorn junkies? Popcorn is pretty inexpensive if you buy the big bags
of kernels. Good luck!

If you go for the true UM, popcorn is not a good option for you but
would work for your teens. Remember, Dr Hyman discourages any food
"with a label".

My husband eats completely different than I do. I have been on the UM
plan for so long that I don't have cravings (or, if I do, it is rare
and I can feed it) so I can have food in the house that I don't eat.

But for meals try to stick to meats and veggies cooked without sauces
and butter (olive oil is a staple I can't do without). I find that I
spend less on food than when I ate a lot of processed food because I
eat smaller portions. I am not filling up on empty food. Fiber
(veggies) and protein (meat) are more filling. I like Dr Hyman's
latest suggestion to visit local farmers' markets for fresh produce.

I have 2 grown daughters and 9 grandkids (7 who visit frequently) and
they have become accustomed to not having sugary junk at my house. It
is a difficult transition, but can be done.
