Hi All,

Just a quick Q, how stable is the Ubuntu to be used as Server? And
what are the advantages compared to other distros? I know there are a
lot of articles posted all over the net but I guess I feel like asking
it here (tsada if it is based on your experience)..hehehe..

TIA,

Sen

Ubuntu as a server behaves like any recent Debian-based server. However, you get fairly recent packages compared to the Debian upstream. What's also good is that Ubuntu now has new offerings as well in terms of cloud support, etc.

Hello Sen,

It's stable enough to be offered as one of the standard OS images in
Amazon EC2. Just recently, major hosting companies like Peer1 and
Serverbeach have rolled out Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) after a
mandatory test period.

I've used it on some personal servers and the clear advantage is the
updating of packages, as hardwyrd had mentioned already.

Are you looking at deploying one soon? Let us know. :)

Cheers,

Jon

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the quick and informative reply.

Actually I'm planning to test it so I'm gathering as much as information that I could have. :D

If the update of packages is the advantage then I think this is really good. :D

Another thing before I forgot, what about the hardware support (New and Old Machines)?

Time to download. :D

Thanks again.

Except for really esoteric hardware, latest iterations of Ubuntu have fairly good support for hardware.

I've ran Ubuntu from older AMD Duron hardware all the way to Intel Core2Duo. Recent builds can run on multi-proc, multicore.

As Sir Botp said, it's just a name. However, "AMD64" connotes not only AMD's but also Intel's EM64T. But since AMD has some extra registers, the "AMD64" loosely means "any x86_64 processor, including AMD". Essentially, AMD and Intel base their major products from the x86 architecture anyway.
