I really like investing in ETF's, but when it comes to my dividend portfolio, I have not used ETF's. I only buy individual stocks. Since my dividend portfolio is in a taxable account, I do not like the possible distributions that can come from funds. I am trying to control my taxes and trying to minimize ordinary income and maximize capital gains (dividends taxed at cap gain rate). I also see that funds typically have low dividend payments. My dividend stocks are long term holds. The problem with my strategy is to keep a diversified portfolio, you have to own quite a few stocks, which is time consuming. Also I am having a hard time finding good stocks trading at value. So many of the stocks are over priced in my opinion.
The SCHD actually looks pretty good, I am surprised the yield is so high (most are much lower) and their turnover is really small for a fund. I may have to look into this one. Thanks for the link!
