My boss is out of town, so I decided that I would do a deep dive into Larry Scott's background. Everyone always talks about how he saved Women's Tennis, diversity hero, whackmeoff, etc., while we all know online sports gambling is the only reason women's tennis exists.
I started at his
Wikipedia. He was an All-American tennis player at Harvard, so I was happy to knock him down a peg as I laughed at his professional tennis singles record of 1-18.
The first thing I took umbrage with was this clearly autobiographical assessment: "During his time in ATP management, Scott put together a lucrative partnership between the ATP and the Swiss marketing company ISL."
Terms = ISL buys ATP rights for $1.2B in May 1999
Result = ISL bankrupt by May 2001, tried to break deal for $150M, then never paid.
Scott takes over WTA in April 2003. In September 2005, the ITF admits that they're 0-47 in finding guilt during match-fixing scandals.
Now to today's news:
Raine Group is made up of ex-Goldman and ex-UBS bankers who created & sold
Yankees YES network, another network that can't seem to garner national syndication. Weird. Raine is partially-owned by William Morris Endeavor, with Ravitch being close personal friends with Ari Emanuel. Raine even shares office space with WME in Beverly Hills.
Long story not short TL/DR - Jeremy Piven is going to own 10% of the Pac-12 broadcasting rights before 2020, and it will not cost him $500M. The over/under has been set at $250M.
