Dear USC Theory Students:

By now, it is hard to overestimate the harm of the COVID19 pandemic to society. However, like every challenge, it  has created some opportunities. For example, essentially all major conferences in TCS this year are transformed into virtual ones, greatly reducing the registration fee and allowing scholars/students across the world to attend without the expense of travel.

ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (SODA21) will be held virtually this year, on Jan. 10 - 13, 2021. See
https://www.siam.org/conferences/cm/conference/soda21

As you may know, this is the premier conference in algorithms and TCS.

If you would like to attend, there are two way to register:

1. Thanks to our industry partners and ACM, the conference has some funds for assisting student registration. See:

That deadline is Dec. 27, 2020.

2. As a generous research grant, the Simons Foundation Investigator Award for USC got permission to use this year's budget to support USC students' registration to TCS conferences. We will be more than happy to reimburse your registration fee for attending SODA with this support. Just save your receipt and send me an email.  You don't have to be my student.

Stay safe,

--Shanghua
