Just received this from Genocide Watch, created and moderated by a good colleague and genocide scholar friend of mine Dr. Gregory H. Stanton. I have sterling regard for his thoughts, and I thought I should share them with you.
I have been at Auschwitz, Poland, from September 14 to 20, as an invited speaker at a UNESCO and US Holocaust Memorial Museum conference of representatives from 19 countries on peace education through the study of the Holocaust and Genocide. There were 12 African
representatives from UNESCO offices and national Ministries of Education on the continent. I made some good friends from Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Morocco, Namibia, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran, South Korea, Cambodia, India, Brazil, the UK, Canada,
among other nations.
My first time at Auschwitz-Birkenau I and II. It was a sobering experience.
Nephew Cornelius, I was the only African scholar speaker at this conference, and I had several questions, like yours, about how I got into Holocaust and Genocide Studies as an African academic. Apologies, though, Nephew Cornelius! I thought we could make it
to Sweden so that I could answer your question over lunch. I understand next time. I will keep in touch off Dialogue.
