Dear All:
With all due respects, I wish to affirm that those opposed to the purchase of the
luxury ocean going airplanes by super rich Nigerian Pastors are not only totally misinformed about the
mission of the Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, they are also suffering from some irrational exuberance brought on
by varying degrees of pathologic wealth envy.
If the mission of a church is to build wealth and prosperity for its parishioners
by whatever means necessary, how dare you question the luxurious lifestyles
of the church leaders? It only makes sense that the more flamboyant the church leaders live the more
church members they will attract. You haven't seen nothing yet. Wait for the revival of the Concorde
and you can bet Nigerian pastors will be amongst those competing to place the first private orders.
If after you have acquired the most expensive automobiles money can buy,
you own one or two ocean going luxury yachts, several hundreds
of residential and commercial real estate in Nigeria and neighborhing African countries
as well as in Europe and North America, how much of a dent would buying a little 15 seater
Challenger Jet make on your limitless wallet or expense account? About the most nonsensical
argument being made by the non-believing spoilers (kaffirs) is that of accountability. Who ever
told these men and women that churches and mosques are bastions of democracy and public
accountability? The church leaders are neither accountable to the government, the Nigerian
public or to their parishioners. They are only accountable to the Almighty God, with whom they
commune several times daily.
The majority of RCCG parishioners see themselves
living their lives through the leaders. Thus when Pastors Adeboye and Oyedipo arrive in church
in a chauffeured Rolls Royce, the average parishioner imagines he/she had also
enjoyed the same largess. When they fly abroad on their private jets, the parishioners also imagine
that they do the same.
At the invitation of a friend, I once attended a Redeem Vigil service (I almost wrote a concert) in Lagos.
The atmosphere, along with the loud music and jubillant atmosphere could be easily mistaken for a
rock concert by Michael Jackson or any other famous international artist. The parishioners were truly happy.
They sang and danced the night away as if there will be no tomorrow. They gladly gave their money away as tithes.
To tell the truth no one forced them to donate their money. Many were speaking in tongues while other parishioners
appeared to be in a trance. The best coercive expnation I could give is that he church leaders have managed
to acquire some hypnotic power over there congregants who seemed to be behaving like zombies.
The pernicious envy has blinded those opposed to these purchases to the fact that religion in Nigeria
is not only a major business, it is in fact the only thriving business left for the masses. Religion and the religious leaders
are more accessible to the common citizens than are the kleptocratic government leaders and civil servants.
The Pastors have realized that the real money--hard currency, is no longer in Nigeria but in the USA. The Pastors are doing their
bit to repatriate Nigerian and African money that have been taken from us since the slave trade
period back home.
Just when they are about to set for a home run, you good for nothing holier than though poor Nigerians who live abroad
are protesting and crying foul! Where were you when Jerry Fallwell and his ilk were raking it in their billions? Why can't your
fellow Nigerians (and Africans) rake some dough in for a change?
If you are as smart as Pastor Adeboye you should be starting your own churches whereever you live.
Pastor Adeboye's RCCG has bought a 50 hectare parcel of land near Dallas, Texas on which they are building their world headquarters.
The thinking ones amongst you should know that picking a southern location in the USA is a strateguic business decision and not one that came
up by chance. They are in the process of recruiting hundreds of millions of white, black and Hispanic Americans from
America's Bible Belt into the RCCG. It wouldnt take time for RCCG to overtake, the Catholic, Baptist, Methodist and all Pentecostal denominations
in the USA. The proceeds from this global expansion which will be directed from the global headquarters in Dallas, Texas will
be forwarded back to Nigeria, where it will be spent on building more churches and recruiting more church goers.
As you can see there is some logic in what you perceive as their madness. A poor man does not tell a rich man
how to spend his money.

The "Winner" jets around in a Challenger while the "Redeemer" cruises around in a Gulfstream. Very soon, we will hear that the Winner has decided to up the ante by replacing his plane with one that could fly faster and reach closer to Heaven than the Redeemer's plane. This will offend the ego of the Redeemer, who will, in response, order another plane... And the religious war will continue at the expense of their poor followers.Redeemed Church Acquires N4bn AircraftBy Chinedu Eze, 03.10.2009
This is insane, to put it mildly. In a country where poverty is endemic, a so-called religious leader, who depends on charity, can have the impunity to spend a whopping FOUR BILLION NAIRA on a 15-seater plane. Instead of using the money to do something tangible to benefit his followers, he follows the selfish highway (to Hell)! Instead of building this expensive new church in the USA, why not go to another African country and help them if the Redeemer is serious about saving souls (as if there are no more souls to save in Nigeria). The only reason why the Overseer chose the USA is purely because of the DOLLAR. He wants to build a church in the richest country in the world just to prove that he is equal to, and as rich as, the American preachers. He will build the church in an American city where there are many Nigerian (suckers). We toil in the diaspora, send money to our family, friends, etc. in Nigeria, and they turn around and give our hard-earned
money to these kinds of people. As if that is not enough insult, he wants to open another bank account, I mean another church, in the USA so that he can be closer to the source. He needs more of those dollars.
I am angry because that kind of money could have been put to better use. I am also angry because when foreigners, especially whites, read or hear about this kind of abuse of power and priviledge, they become more convinced that African "leaders" will ever remain corrupt.
Dear all,
What is intriguing and mind bugling is the fact that Adeboye could purchase an aircraft worth 28 million dollars while his church created the most ridiculous and dangerous highway traffic jam on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
It will not matter to the public, I presume, if the same members of the public can willfully surrender their savings and hard earned Naira to Adeboye and his RCCG operations, but it should become public concern if Abeboye and his RCCG should use this money to acquire a luxurious aircraft while the public is suffering from the chaos created by Abeboye and his RCCG on Lagos-Ibadan expressway. It is not a story that there were many occasions when travelers have to sleep overnight on that road simply because RCCG is holding its prayer or service sessions.
As mentioned by Ogbeni Adejuwon, there is definitely a difference between faith and religion or to put it the other way, people of God and religious people. I was one of the young pioneers of RCCG many years ago during the period of RCCG founder - Rev. Akindayomi initially known as Akindolire. At the beginning the headquarters of the church was at No. 9 Willoughby Street Ebute Metta and later moved its headquarters a little eastwards to Attan also at Ebute Metta. I spent approximately nine years in the church before I finally traveled out of Nigeria. In those years there were few branches of RCCG - about three or four of them. Our own branch was at No. 29 now 33 Market Street, Somolu, Lagos.
In those days, there was faith driven services, which I will call real evangelical worshiping of God when the practices of faith is initiated on the tenets of the disciples of Jesus Christ. By the time I started vising Nigeria from overseas in the late eighties and early nineties, RCCG for once has moved its camp to Lagos-Ibadan expressway which can be seen as an improvement on the material side of the church. However, the church had introduced many religious or non-faith driven mode of services such as an orchestra type of music and serious dancing by the choir and the church members as opposed to the usual serene and holy ghost driven style of services that I left before I traveled out. Though, when I visited the church in the eighties and nineties, RCCG still maintained the rules that stipulate the type of dresses especially for women including, non-wearing of jeweleries and other trinkets but in essence the market type of religion had
crept into RCCG.
The new style of worshiping has seriously introduced religion as opposed to faith into RCCG and hence created an atmosphere of market style of religion, thanks and no thanks to Abeboye. Agree with Bob Olukoya, many of these church leaders including Abeboye are top-notchers, no doubt. Adeboye is a Ph.D holder in mathematics and was a teacher at Unilag before he joined RCCG in the company of Cumuli who is now the leader of Deeper Life Church. Adeboye was made and installed by the founder of RCCG - Akindayomi as an Overseers before he passed on. Some years after, he started introducing all these religious marketing which attracted million Nigerians world-wide into the church. Today he is reaping the fruits of his education as Bob Olukoya has nicely cajoled and joined the group of religious marketers as opposed to spiritual evangelism which was the practice before I left for overseas.
Definitely (someone can prove me wrong) one evangelical church which many, including RCCG was emulating that we knew those days, is the Apostolic Faith which started its camp side at Maryland area of Lagos and still remains a quiet but powerful spiritual church devoid of religious marketing style. Though it has branches across West Africa even in those days, but its evangelical practices seem to remain the same, otherwise it would have marketed itself vigorously across the globe taking advantage of Nigerians abroad.
Don't get me wrong, I have no quarrel against Adeboye and his RCCG, my concern here is that he could have equally applied his know-how to relieve the suffering Nigerians especially on Lagos-Ibadan expressway by using this 28 million dollars air craft money, using part of the vast area of land acquired by RCCG to divert the traffic on Lagos-Ibadan expressway to his camp side.
As an evangelist preaching to redeem the suffering souls, this is what is expected of him and his RCCG. But as a mathematician turned economist, he may not care until someone or somebody tells him that his freedom and that of his RCCG in flinging their shorts stop where other noses begin. That money should have been utilized to correct the evil that his church has created on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Sir,
I am not an authority on matters involing our lords spiritual. I accept my limitations. In Nigeria, if we look carefully, there is a big difference between the practice of faith and religion. Christianity is expectedly a faith based relationship with the creator. But, it is a relgion in Nigeria. And religion, as we all know, pauperises the mind whereas faith fres the mind. And in a climate where hope of any kind, branded in the coat of faith is an instant cell. Holy ghost highway as rightly pointed out has become an exhibition site where these product called faith is sold under different brands. My worry and surprise is that wheras the christianity version and its islamic counterpart saw the vast opportunity and came out with a compelling business plan it tow, the traditional religions have shut their product line and not competing at all.
Or, how do we think the Lagos I badan expreways will look like if the Ogbonis, Aje, Osho, alawo opa etc hold their meetings and prayer sessions on this same highway. I am just curious.
By the grace of God, I am a child of God with absolute faith in the death, burioal and resurrection of our lord Jesus christ. God will help us in Nigeria. I think Bob is just comparing religious leaders with the public rouges whose strategy is official stealing.

Bob Olukoya:
I think the piece below could easily earn you a job as the
Attorney and Chief Spokesman for Nigerian Evangelical Charismatic Preachers.
It will be a well paying cushy job! You will get to fly with Pastor Adeboye or pastor Oyedepo
everywhere they fly to in their private jets.
I agree with all your arguments. These preachers are geniuses. They have managed
to perfect a small idea (scam) pioneered by Jesus of Oyingbo (Jesu Oyingbo--Pa Odumosu)
in the 1950s into worldwide multi-billion dollar empires.
The priests truly need their own private jets! They are too important to travel within
the constraints of the schedules of commercial airlines.
Your most compelling argument is this one:
"If anyone deserves these perks, they do. If these men were business entrepreneurs,
with their skills and abilities, they would be top-notchers with a jet or two in their hangars."--Bob Olukoya
I am enthralled with the idea of two jets in the hangar--one for the Priest and one for the Madam
to be followed if business remains good may be a third smaller jet for20the kids in one or two years.
Nigerians--we know we have really arrived when Newsweek picks Pastor Adeboye as the only Nigerian
amongst the world's 100 most visionary people. I wondered after reading the story where our scientists, lawyers, physicians,
engineers and other professionals were and how they could have been passed over by Newsweek editors.
Then I had a Eureka moment: They are all attending vigils and donating their salaries and research grants
at Pentecostal churches in return for prayers that they get promoted and that their salaries and research grants
are increased substantially in the next budget. meanwhile, the Professors, engineers, doctors, architects etc
cannot afford to service or change the tires on their cars.
A sucker is truly born every second. The only thing better than a sucker
is an educated and well informed sucker. They can be found in their millions in the Nigerian populations at home and
abroad.
Not to be outdone by the Christians, Nigerian muslim preachers have also started holding their own money making
vigils under what they call NAFSAT or NASFAT. These Islamic vigils I was told are held on Sundays, specifically to prevent
members of their congregations from drifting to and getting lost to the prosperity Pentecostal preachers. It was bizarre to say
the least, when I witnessed a sea of Muslim children dressed in white flowing robes topped by white hijabs for the girls
and white caps for the boys. These kids co uld have been arab boys and girls judging from their attires.
The older congregants both male and female also dressed in a similat fashion. initially
I thought they were Aladura church goers, then I immediately remembered that aladura churdh goers do not
wear hijabs.
What is most surprising about the followers are their levels of
education and sophistication. It remains mind boggling that some of Nigeria's brightest citizens
at home and abroad have succumbed to these scams.
The people are suffering in their millions and some preachers are buying Gulfstreams and
Challengers long after the Saudi Princes have started watching their cheque books
in the face of the global recession.
Religion is a recession-proof enterprise in Nigeria!
Bye,
Ola

These religious leaders ought to be celebrated! They do not have regular allocations from oil revenues, they are not contractors, etc. Yet, most of them are able to build their churches from a few thousands worshippers in Nigeria to massive institutions all over the world. They have been able to manage men, women and resources to a level where they can afford to make their evangelical missions less tedious through the use of private jets.
The Vatican (headed by the Pope) had income and expenditure of $310 million and $307 million respectively in 2006 (CIA Holy See factbook). Therefore, if the Pope desires a private jet, it would be small fries. The Pope can rely on Alitalia making available to him and his entourage on-demand, reliable small or large aircrafts to travel the world as and when required. Even, HM, the Queen of England and the Commonwealth depends on British Airways to provide the state of the art aircraft whenever she and her entourage travels abroad. Which airline would these great men of God rely upon in Nigeria? Virgin Nigeria?, Private operators? What is the fleet capacity of an average airline operator in Nigeria?
Dont forget that most of the trips abroad of these men of God are for spiritual conferences, meetings and retreats organised with almost military=2 0precisions by non-Nigerians or Nigerians domiciled abroad. As important as these men of God are, these events would not be delayed if they were late, miss they connecting flights, etc.
If anyone deserve these pecks, they do. If these men were buisness enterpreneurs, with their skills and abilities, they would be top-notchers with a jet or two in their hangars.
These men of God are not even answerable to their flocks! They are answerable to the Holy Spirit and ultimately, the almighty God .
The maker of heaven and earth and the beautiful Gulfstream.

So what? There are empty houses in Lekki and VI, but overcrowded shanties and slums in Surulere and Ebute Metta. Should we be advocating that new homes mustn't be built until we evacuate the poor people from the slums into the high-brow areas? Your thought process and suggestions are "ragtags". I can't believe what I read here sometimes, even from people that live in the "land of the free". Religion is a private matter and I care less if Pastor Adeboye decides to buy the Endeavour spacecraft, only his flock has the final say.
Have a ragtag week ahead!

Every second, a Sucker is born!
----Singer, Mick Jagger----
Chief Kassim,
About 9 months ago, I read of one African Church that is
making plans to build a University in the US --a t a time a lot
of African nations have far fewer Universities to educate
their young population. Might it be this same high-flying
Redeemed Church? If I have to bet, I'll bet that it is this
same Church! If there's a development or investment in
which the United States has attained super saturation, it
is the building of new Universities. The newest genuine
University in the same US was perhaps Oral Roberts University,
and it has not lived up to its billings --though its supporters
and Patrons will argue differently.
As a matter of fact, I now vividly remember that it is this
very same Redeemed Church, which bought this $28M
Aircraft, that is also planning this university in the US!
It may actually be time for State governments in Nigeria
to clamp down on the building of new Churches, unless
the PROPRIETORS (thats what they are) can demonstrate
beyond reasonable doubt that their Congregational needs
cannot be met by existing Churches. It doesn't make sense
having Crooks come up with new "Churches" when the Pews
in the Catholic, Methodist, Anglican, Faith, Apostolic, etc
Churches are empty. In the end, this may be the way to put
these Crooks out of business.
Have a good day..

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has acquired a new aircraft for N4 billion ($28 million).
The aircraft, a Gulfstream 4XP, with number 707EA, arrived Lagos from Bahamas last Sunday.
Industry insiders said the Gulfstream 4XP is a transatlantic aircraft that has the capacity of about 15 passengers depending on the configuration.
The church acquired the aircraft years after the General Overseer of Living Faith Worldwide, a.k.a.. Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, acquired a Challenger aircraft, with number D6640, which was parked a few meters away from Adeboye’s Gulfstream when THISDAY visited the airside of General Aviation Terminal (GAT) yesterday.
A pilot told THISDAY that the aircraft and many others privately owned by Nigerians are not registered with Nigerian code “N” because “they usually say that they chattered it for a while whenever they are questioned. You know Bishop Oyedepo of Winners has been operating this aircraft (pointing to the Challenger) for sometime, but it has remained in foreign registration number.”
THIDAY also learnt that Oyedepo has ordered for another aircraft bigger than the one acquired by Adeboye.
By 2.00 pm yesterday, officials who looked like engineers were seen inspecting the aircraft, which was allowed to rev for hours.
Besides buying the aircraf t, a lot of money would be spent in maintaining it and paying the crew, in addition to the landing and parking charges.Unlike a commercial aircraft which is always in the air, the private jet will spend more time on the ground and must be checked before taking off.
An aeronautical engineer with one of the airlines said besides the mandatory checks, much money would not be spent on its maintenance for now “because it is a new aircraft, but you know that there are rotables which are time-bound parts which are changed regularly.
“The same with refitting parts. These are parts that are changed after every 12 or 15 calendar months whether you are flying or not. So, acquiring a private aircraft means that you are ready to be spending money to keep it going.”
Expressing surprise on the purchase, a former official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), who craved anonymity, said with the present global economic recession, it was shocking that anyone, even a business man could spend such money on a private aircraft..
He said: “This is unbelievable. You know the amount of poverty in this land, which I know is widespread. How can he acquire such aircraft when he knows that members of his church are suffering?

Since 1999, many Nigerians have acquired private aircraft.

| Yahaya's position explain this phenomenon more analytically. We have seen this expressed of the Black Churches in the United States, where this elevation of the pastor becomes reflective of the enthronement of the ordinary worshippers, and embodies such so-called advancement through utopia day-dreaming of their own upliftment. They see nothing wrong then with the pastors of these religious orders and entities driving their often oddious colored cadillacs. --- On Wed, 3/11/09, Dr. Valentine Ojo <val...@md.metrocast.net> wrote: |
