Howdy all, since I'm just getting back in the swing of
things, I'm hoping someone is familiar enough to tell me if this is
new to
the 11th, or has been in effect for a while?...Any response would be
appreciated.........Thanks in advance.....Leaker

Under the 9th edition, the pick rule reads:

"No player may establish a position, or move in such a manner, so as
to obstruct the movement of any player on the opposing team; to do so
is a "pick". "

As of the 10th, it reads:

"No offensive player may move in such a manner to cause a defensive
player guarding a receiver to be obstructed by another
player. Obstruction may be the result of contact with, or the need to
avoid, the offending player. To do so while the obstructed
defensive player is within three meters of the receiver is a pick."

The 11th edition slightly modifies it to:

"A pick occurs whenever an offensive player moves in a manner that
causes a defensive player guarding (II.G) an offensive player to be
obstructed by another player. Obstruction may result from contact
with, or the need to avoid, the obstructing player."

I started playing under the 10th edition, but to me, the 9th edition
wording has some serious flaws in that it seems to disallow all
movement (or even establishment of a position) that would cause
another player to have to run around you (not just "picks" of a
defender chasing an offender), in conflict with XVIII. (the right to
take any position that doesn't cause contact). The 10th edition fixes
this by saying that it is the movement of the offensive player causing
a defensive player to be obstructed by someone else that is illegal.
The 11th edition seems to clean up the slightly troublesome wording of
"the offending player," changing it to "the obstructing player."

Also, in the 9th edition, there doesn't seem to be any distance
limitation to the pick rule (no "you have to be within 3 meters" or
guarding an offender)

You can check out scans of older versions of the rules from my site:

http://www.alanhoyle.com/ult-rules/

I have varying quality of scans of editions 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10

Unfortunately, the scans are not text-searchable, they are just images

7th Edition includes text "Players must play the disc, not the opponent.  That is, they must not position themselves or move for the purpose of impeding other players.  To do so is a foul."

8th Edition, the first UPA edition and a complete rewrite of the rules, is the first place that I see the word "pick" in XVIII.3.

Howdy Alan, Thanks for helping out this old Condor, collecting & presenting all that info is a great thing you've done for the whole Plastic Tribe, & especially the Ultimate Clan......
It was a very interesting journey, starting at #1, and following the transitions from version to version. In the process I figured out that
I started playing just before the 6th from what I remember........ Thanks again....................SPREAD THE JAM..........Leak

Since yesterday, I have found a free OCR program for my computer, processed the original .PNG scans, and combined the resulting PDFs together.  I can't vouch for the accuracy, but you can do some text searching now.

If you downloaded them yesterday, new copies are available now.

Does anyone, perchance, have a copy of the 3rd or 5th editions?
