Hi,
I missed the gim due to some hectic scheduling conflicts and am still interested in the club. Can you give me any info I might've missed? Thank you!

Hey Dillon and Scherezade.

Thanks for reaching out, I'm so glad that you're interested!

No worries that you missed our GIM, and yes, of course I can give you a brief overview! Hopefully this serves to help others interested in UP3 that also could not make it to the GIM.

Essentially, UP3 explores the interdisciplinary nature of cities, and as a group, works to understand how urban policy and planning can address - instead of cause - many global social, economic, political, and environmental issues. We turn social, environmental, and political liabilities into assets and profitable opportunities. We network with leaders in the field, inviting speakers from Tufts (such as the UEP Professors) and surrounding universities to our group, and we present our ideas to the Tufts community. But we also go off-campus, working as a group to collectively decide specific case-studies to examine in specific cities (domestically and hopefully internationally), and then traveling there to conduct research, meet with leaders in the field there, and hopefully lobby our ideas to them and collaborate with them as "consulting volunteers" as well. Furthermore, we hope to grow and learn from each other's specific interests, experiences, and perspectives.

We are a new group on campus, but as Tufts' only urban development group, we believe there is a lot of potential and a lot of opportunity to take it in new directions, dependent on what UPP'ers want to explore. We hope to accomplish these goals and I personally believe we can certainly do so as a collective group.

There are so many interesting things to explore, literally everywhere. For instance, how can urban development improve relations between Arabs and Jews in Jerusalem? http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/09/23/world/middleeast/two-peoples-one-capital.html. Or how can it increase socioeconomic mobility and social capital, instead of segregation in low-income housing projects in communities divided by arterial highways? http://www.vanishingny.org/video/vny_trailer.htmlhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPILhiTJv7E. Your interests and experiences are especially relevant in this group, as we're a collective group that of course values everyone's perspectives; urban development is a very grey idea.

Anyways, all of our basic information is actually posted on our Google Group.

This is where the basic information is located:  https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/up3attuftsuniversity

Hope to see you soon, and please let me know if you have any further questions!

We will announce our first meeting of the year soon on the e-list which you guys are clearly members of.

Best,
Rayn
