Hello everyone,
Welcome back! Tonight we will be having our first meeting of the semester. It will be in East 016 at 9PM. Today's topic will be the history of race riots in urban settings. Primarily we will be looking at the revolutionary histories of 4 different cities: LA, Chicago, London and Port-au-Prince to analyze the role of racism in contemporary urban planning and policy, and in a more theoretical plane, why the structure of the city is conducive to becoming the site of violent confrontation yet productive exchange of various ideas. What is the role of the city in targeting issues of social justice? How can we "humanize" the policies which guide the construction of today's cities?
Hope to see you all tonight!
