This course will introduce students to the social problems and human
rights issues related to labor migration in South East Asia while
involving them in a field research service learning project. For the
first three weeks of this six week summer course, students will attend
seminars and class at UNCG that will focus on understanding the
social, political, economic and historical factors that have resulted
in exploitative practices of labor recruitment and employment in the
region. Students will also develop skills in interviewing, surveying,
and observation which they will then employ in the field. We will then
travel to Taipei, Taiwan where the student will be introduced to labor
migrants from the Philippines as well as personnel from NGOs,
churches, universities, and government agencies that attempt to aide
them. Next it is off to Manila, Philippines for a week of meetings
with government officials, relief workers, and labor migrants who have
recently returned from abroad or are awaiting job orders that will
send them to another country. We’ll fly back to Taiwan and take the
high speed rail down to Kaohsiung in the industrial south where we
will visit Export Processing Zones (EPZs) and conduct fieldwork with
factory workers.

Applications are due by Nov 23, 2009. Space is limited to 10 students.
Applicants will be notified by Dec 1 and will need to make a non-
refundable deposit of $500 by Dec 5, 2009.
