Haiti:

For anyone looking for a way to optimize the impact of their donation
to aid the victims of the earthquake, I'd like to tell you a little
bit about an organization, Partners In Health ( www.pih.org ). PIH has
been doing medical work in Haiti for over 25 years. They have a large
hospital complex in the Central part of the country with smaller
hospitals and clinics scattered around the area. One of their
founders, Dr. Paul Farmer, recently named as a special envoy there,
has been instrumental in mobilizing our government to action. Charity
Navigator, an independent organization that investigates and ranks
NGOs and charities gives them its top rating of 4 stars. 95% of the
money coming in to PIH goes directly to its programs.

They know the country, they are partners in the communities they serve
with local people providing much of the support for the work they do.
Because of their location away from the epicenter, most of the PIH
facilities are still intact so supporting them essentially assures the
money will go immediatly and directly to aid the most vulnerable
victims.

Finally,we are organizing an event (details in development) by the end
of the month for Haiti relief: Zanmi-UNCG: Standing in Solidarity with
the People of Haiti . (Zanmi is the Creole word for partner). If
anyone is interested in pitching in for the planning and development,
Sarah Wagner and I from the anthro department are organizing a meeting
sometime Tuesday or Wednesday. Send me an email and I'll let you know
the time and location as soon as we line it up.

I would be grateful if you could forward this message to as many
people as possible.
Thanks,

Jo Paluzzi
