Subject: Development of a common inter-agency web platform: 19 March Meeting

Dear Colleagues,

OCHA’s Humanitarian Reform Support and Field Information Services Units (HRSU/FIS) are planning to host a one day workshop in Geneva on 19 March to determine how to better address the information needs of the humanitarian community, in particular at the country level. The workshop is targeted at cluster/sector coordinators, information management (IM) focal points (including web experts and other technical staff) as well as other interested partners.

OCHA is committed to developing this site in partnership with you to ensure it meets the needs of cluster/sector leads and cluster partners.  Rather than being a parallel effort to existing humanitarian information tools, this common inter-agency web platform will consolidate the work of clusters to date, and support information exchange and coordination amongst, and within, clusters.

A working prototype of what the future web platform might look like can be seen on the Kenya Inter Cluster webpage (http://www.humanitarianreform.org/Default.aspx?tabid=489) currently hosted by the Humanitarian Reform website.

Over the last couple of months, the Inter Agency Information Management Working Group (IA IM WG) has been discussing such an initiative and at its last meeting in January, the group was briefed on a proposal from Microsoft.

Microsoft has been involved in a range of initiatives in support of humanitarian emergency response, including participation in UNDAC, the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster and the Global Symposium +5 ‘Information for Humanitarian Action’ (Geneva, October 2007). Microsoft has also made a corporate commitment to ‘global citizenship’ and is leading an initiative to coordinate private sector ICT support to humanitarian response.

Coordinated by OCHA, Microsoft will be hosting a workshop in New York on 24-25 March to define the technical requirements of the web platform following which a working prototype will be developed that would improve the current humanitarian reform website.

OCHA will also be conducting bilateral discussions with cluster/sector focal points to ensure that all stakeholders are adequately consulted as part of the process in the lead up to and beyond the Geneva and New York workshops.

Sincere apologies for the late notice. Additional details on meeting venues and agendas will be forwarded to you shortly. For any further information please contact Myke Leahy on +41 22 917 2153, e-mail:le...@un.org.

Best Regards
